Rules to be changed to alter the monotony of batsmen's ODIs
by M IYER on Mar 10, 2015 03:25 PM

A few rules should be changed for the better of ODIs which according to my understanding will relieve the nauseating feeling when bowlers are slogged...literally by the patta batsmen and the record books are disturbed by many not-so-worthy talents which shake the positions of blasters like Viv Richards, Javed Miandad, Bian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Hayden, Inz\'ul-Haq, Vir\'Sehwag and for that matter even Sachin Tendulkar. The other artists like Ganguly, Dravid. Gavaskar, Boycott, Arvind D\'Silva, Ranatunga, Haynes, Greenidges, Martin Crow and even Don Bradman are pushed to being \"they were greats AT THAT TIME\" cadre by the banging given to the VERY HARD WORKING AND IMMENSELY \'FITTER\' BOWLERS!!!! And it is getting monotonous now to see a 35 ball hundred (with a couple of dropped catches), 4-5 sixers, (for a fiction of a script) and after good batsmen of the team fail and almost everyone\'s lost hope, an anybody like a Mitchell Johnson sort, who has the MUSCLE POWER to lift or swing the willow comes in when the team is in dire straights needing to score @8.5 runs an over for another 12 overs, and lo and behold, he carts the bowlers for a 40 odd ball innings and Aussies win it with 3 over to spare......This was made possible due to the 55-60 yards boundary rope and the impending compulsory power play. Where lofting the ball inside the boundary would have pushed him to pavilion in first slog by him, now it fetches him a boundary because there was no f

....'coz there was no fielder outside the ring in the 'catching position'. It encourages the "patta" batsman, it discourages the "no.1 bowler" like Steyn, lower the RRR (run rate reqd.).... Does it mean a Mithcell Johnson is a better batsman than, Lance Klusner or Dayle Steyn is worst than Suresh Raina who might NOT HV bowled in the Power Play and hence earned a better economy rate than Steyn. In this era, a fearsome fast bowler like Pat'Patterson woud have been sliced for fours through lemon-cuts and flashed over thirdman for sixers whereas, in those eras even Ramiz or Waugh was wary of facing him. Thus, the same batsman who was struggling to score the over before, comes alive with the Power Play implemented. Stupifying..against the run of play. So, forget this a la Rohit Shetty script and aye the (ONLY 4) rules to be changed- (1) remove the power play, (2) make a minimum 65 yards boundary compulsory (3) leave a minimum bit of grass on the pitch & (4) In a Free-hit, there should not be any run allowed if the batsman is 'caught'. Come on man, see the crispiness which returns to the same ODIs and also see the sloggers being dished out of the big scoring games ie. genuine batsmanship will survive and flourish and bowlers will also be alive. Hope for the best.
