Bunch of overhyped team except Kohli and Dhoni.. When they will crash out is a guess.. nothing much. Playing people like Rohit Sharma and keeping Yuvraj, Uthaapa, gambhir out can only spel gloom for India..

Nice Article

There was a time when West Indies took the maximum liberty against Indians. That was because India did not have a fast bowler and could not retaliate with bouncers. West Indies deserve the worst humiliation from India.

I wonder if a mostly inconsequential league match deserved such a never ending analysis... I can understand if you write one after Indian wins the championship but this is just overdoing it when the group standings are already pretty clear and the match was not really going to change its fortune...

Prem Panickar???

I am not sure who Prem Panickar is. However, after reading through this article, I am certain that I will never want to read another article of his.

The language is much flamboyant and bombastic. Too much of details forced into the article. Language is meant for communication and help readers enjoy what is being presented and not intimidate them. It clearly shows that the author is more focused to show off his vocabulary.

Certainly, not my kind of style... I trust most of you will agree with me.

Hello RameshKrishnan,

...just my 2 cents :

I do believe that the purpose-of-language debate is more or less settled.
In favour of clarity & ease of the thoughts being communicated, in a simple language/vocab.

That way, you ARE RIGHT, NO DOUBT !!!
.......

But then there's an other perspective too :
say, we're reading up an essay on the nation's problems, the industrial scenario, or a technical write-up explaining something technological or scientific.....we need clarity through simple language.

What is Shakespearean poetry for, then ?

Having only a single & rigid view of language thus, would make us all poorer; we'd have no use/place for anything exalting in literature.
No more poetry, word-play, beautiful literature, etc.
Beyond the obvious fact that INDIANS won this match, none of us would have any need to read this from Prem Panicker, IF we don't enjoy his language.

WE DO !!!!

The figures of speech, the metaphors, the twists of phrase....all these bring great DELIGHT to the avid, discerning reader.
NOT MERELY CONVEYING A FACT, we RE-LIVE the sensation in reading writers like Prem Panicker, R.Mohan (of The Hindu, writing cricket some 2 decades ago ??), Nirmal Shekar (on tennis) etc.
Some of us felt downright depressed to see Prem disappearing for a few years.
see Cric Fan & Seenu Subbu's lines below.
In such cases like this, where we DON'T NEED to know thru' these writers what happened, IT'S THEIR STYLE OF WRITING, THEIR WORDPLAY...that we A

Ok Prem err. Prasad.

Your points are noted.
Its true we need to have
some dalliances with
words to spice up reading.
The think with you perhaps
is you are using too many
punctuations that brings
the hiccups and also
makes the reader feel
like a juvenile.

Mr. Ramesh, if your miniscule acumen fails to comprehend the mere nuances of prem's article, suggest you take up wren & martin or perhaps attend a proper school to learn english, otherwise hold your peace and stop bellowing

Hey Arjun. Why don't you take your know-it-all attitude and shove it. Being hoity-toity does no service to anyone. How's my vocab boy?

Me too.
There were times when we enjoyed reading Prem Panicker MORE than the actual game or its result !!!
He brought us so much joy.
Whenever I read him, am reminded of the famous ad-line of SPORTSTAR magazine (don't know if it's being published, still !!) :
Relive the sensation !!!
