From the perspective of expectation of the people of India, I can say, he is next Sachin.
But is he better than Sachin, I personally feel he is not so at present but in the long term if he would become better, only time will tell.
Even if he becomes better than before, Sachin will always have special status in the hearts of people who have analyzed his play right from the day he came to bat in test as a 16 year old boy. The way he changed the aspirations of Indian Cricket, no one else did!
No offense to sachin and fans (me being one). Kohli is much better batsman than Sachin. If he can control his temper and maintain his fitness, he will overtake Sachin's records in far less time and in far more style (and agression)

Mr Ramesh I am Sachin's fan as well and I don't have any problem with Kohli. He is a good batsman but he is certainly not close to Sachin. Sachin was a special batsman. He has played against quality bowling attacks like Walsh, Ambrose, Akram, Waqar, Rawalpindi express, Warne, Saqlain, He has played against most teams when they were at top and had high qulaity players. If you remember Austrlia were on top, Ponting, McGrath, Waugh and at that time there was not much like like today. Today most of the teams are going through transition perios and don't have that quality which they had before and playing against those teams and scoring runs is not a hard job. Sachin is the greatest of all and he will remain. He has dominated the classic bowlers so well.
After all India won a game in which India was already the favorites. People must remember that Pakistan has never won against India in a WC and so India has never won against South Africa. I am sure when India loses against SA all this euphoria will die. I will give India chance of actually making this WC if they can pull it through SAfrica. Very slim chances

And, I said 100 times at least that he much better than Dhoni in ODI & T20 and 1000 times better than in test.
This is what is wrong with Indian Cricket. Not the overseas losses in the last few years and not the bowling failures at the death, but their fans and the media. The euphoria is juvenile and masks all the weaknesses. Kohli lived a charmed life. It was Dhawan, after a string of failures, who played a gem along with the irrepressible Raina. Lots of scope for improvement. I still cannot see the world champions in them.
As Long as he Wins Matches for India, I am not bothered if he becomes the Next Bradman /Sachin / Lara / Ponting / Sunil Gavaskar etc etc etc by overhauling their records in the process.
Only performance on the given day matters, it will be even better if he can keep repeating the same every now and then so that we can have something to cheer about for Indian cricket.

Well said. Sachin was a very special batsman. He played against real quality bowling, real pace and spin bowling and he had played against temas when they were at top. Now mostly every team is going through transition period.
