Any good players should be able to play on diff surfaces. Take tennis grandslam event; 4 diff courts and one who wins in all 4 are considered great. Same should be in cricket - playing in seaming, bouncy, spinning surfaces well is the best batsman/bowler. Don't complain

Nothing Extraordinary - This is Not an achievement
by RSS on Dec 31, 2015 11:41 PM  | Hide replies

Asswin Became Number 1 Test Bowler because :

1) Indian wickets were Doctored purposefully to Defeat & Humiliate South Africa as they were Test No. 1 Rank team before they landed on Indian shores. After South Africa beat India in T20 & ODI Series, it was time to save face and reputation. So BCCI manipulated the conditions to suit Spinners from 1st ball.

2) Hence Asswin, Ravindra Jadeja & Amit Mishra picked up wickets due to the helpful pitches.

3) Dale Steyn was injured for 3 tests in India & did not take too many wickets either in the 1st Test at Mohali, so his Ranking went down.

4) If Dale Steyn would have been Match fit and among wickets then Asswin would have still been in 2nd place.

The pitch argument will not hold much water, now that the 1st test between SA and ENG is over. Despite playing in conditions suitable to SA, they not only could overpower ENG. but also failed to draw the match. So, it is not pitch alone that gives a team victory.

South Africa Lost the 1st Test to England Because :

1) Dale Steyn got injured mid way in his spell & had to be taken to hospital, so SA lost the mental advantage.

2) SA Batsmen - Hashim Amla, Faf Du Plessis, JP Duminy Failed to score Big vs England's bowlers.

3) England Batted & Bowled Better than South African XI players.

4) South Africa could have played for longer time & look for a draw, but that did not happen.

5) 1st Test between SA & Eng lasted for 5 days and did not end on Day 3 or Day 4 like in India, Both Teams can math each other Strength for Strength & Both teams have World class Bowlers & batsmen. It was not a Battle of unequals & both teams were evenly matched.

Of course we can complain if Australia, England, New Zealand & South Africa create Fast Bowlers wickets that suit their strengths.

India also managed to beat Australia in Perth in the Year 2008 with Fast Bowlers, Similarly England also Beat India in 2012-2013 series with Spin on the Spinning wickets of India.

What I am trying to say is Asswin needs to Perform also in Foreign conditions like how Muttaiah Muralitharan & Shane Warne, Stuart Mc Gill, Graeme Swann, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed & Anil Kumble also used to bowl Outside Spinning Sub continental wickets and still make the batsmen play & miss and get them out.

Indian Fast Bowlers get carried away by the Pace & Bounce outside India and they too get the same conditions like the Host team does. But rarely our Fast bowlers excel in helpful conditions as the Host batsmen know how to tackle Fat bowling at a much more Faster pace. Our bowlers rarely clock 130 to 145 KPH, Yes I do agree Fast bowling is Laborious and Tough, but Indians Historically have struggled to produce Great Fast bowlers and seldom do we have Batsmen who can Counter attack Explosive Fast bowling from other teams.

If Asswin has an Enviable Foreign Record Away from Home, we can definitely call him as a Champion spinner. If not, he is merely like a Home Grown Hand raised Tiger cub that can survive only in known conditions and not outside its familiar territory.

Habitually one gentleman used to comment in this blog whenever Sania Mirza won a grand slam, as she has won because of Hinges or she is not good in playing singles like that. I do not find any difference between those comments with Aswin's performance. Whether this gentleman is aware that he is one of the fastest 100 wicket taker in Test Cricket and also 150th also. Also many do not accept Dhoni as best Captain while world recognize him. Iam constrained to say it is nothing but mere averson
