dhoni's away losses were also because he played 19 of his 30 away tests against aus eng and sa...about 63% away tests against these 3 countries...the maximum any indian captain ever played against these 3 countries at their home....
that is why 15 away losses in his name....
on the other hand ganguly played only 10 out of his 28 away tests against these 3 countries (only 35%)...besides he captained as many as 7 away tests against bd and zim (a whopping 25%)...STILL he has 10 away test losses...
dhoni had the misfortune of captaining the legends like sachin dravid laxman sehwag bhajji zaheer who were on their last legs in those whitewashes...and when he returned for away tests again against sa eng aus he had all new players in his side who had never played any away tests (with the exception of 2 0r 3 players like kohli and ishant)...fortunately kohli has become captain when all these players have matured with experience in playing away tests in sa eng aus and nz...
you have to consider the above points while understanding why dhoni's away record is so...

even clarke who recently retired and is considered by many as attacking, proactive, taking risks to win etc etc has 13 away test losses in the 25 odd away tests that he captained...

Hi Sunil, I think Clarke is a defensive captain.Proof is latest ashes were Cook was more agressive(setting catching positionfor Smith cover drive, having 3 slips always etc).
India will do well outside subcontinent too with current cop of players now becoming experienced and the captain himself is positive unlike our previous captain fool who was probably the worst Test captain India has ever had..
