He is more valuable than some of those 'legends' who score a 'great' century followed by a series of flops, again followed by a 'scintillating' century followed by... (etc. etc. etc.)

Yes. De Villiers is 26.65 times better than Sir Don Bradman and Gary Sobers put together.
Similarly the best bowler is Ajit Agarkar who was always consistent unlike Kumble who took 10 wickets in an innings just once.
