Zaheer Khan has been an average or below average bowler with poor pace and and some small-time swing. He cannot be a test-caliber bowler on a par with Varun Aaron or Umesh Yadav. He simply does not have the pace to run through a complete side. Furthermore, he is very expensive as a bowler with not a high strike rate. In short, he cannot scare or snare world class batsmen.

That's the story of Indian pace bowling as a whole in general. After Kapil, there has been no standard world-class Indian bowler till date. They come, they flash n immediately, it's back to eternal darkness again. Speaks volumes about Indian pace bowling, notwithstanding the plethora of pace shops (academies) having mushroomed in every nook n corner.

Also, he is a total liability on the field and he cannot bat when the situation demands. Look at the fast bowlers of Australia, let it be Johnson or Harris. They all contribute with bat also.
If that is what is going to be role of Zak- passing on skills to younger bowlers- he can very well advise as a coach/consultant. Why be part of the team
I completely agree with akram. May be zaheer has a year or so left in him. He can be made the incharge of pace unit so that he can transfer his knowledge and skills to the younger generation. That is how a transition should be. Well said

that can happen, when he leads from the front and show how wickets should be taken. if only mentorship is his role. then better become bowling coach. Shami bowled better without Zaheer
