actually two wickets per innings is not all that bad because that would mean 4 wickets per test...

but you are making a mistake...it is actually 1.6 per innings....78 is his batting innings no...he has bowled in 93 innings...

btw just to shock or surprise you i will give your figures of kapil srinath and zaheer 3 of our best pace bowlers...

kapil dev 131 tests 227 innings 434 wickets that is just 1.91 wickets per innings...
srinath 67 tests 121 innings 236 wickets that is just 1.95 wickets per innings...
zaheer 90 tests 161 innings 302 wickets that is just just 1.87 wickets per innings...

hmmmm...:)

When we see the whole stats, its like seeing SRT's runs and saying he is the best batsman :). So I would prefer to see the recent stats (which I saw just now).

Not to ridicule Ishant, but for the last 2 years (2012-2013), he is nowhere upto the mark. Only one 4-wicket haul (in SA during Dec-2013), 3 wickets in Nagpur & 3 in Mohali. 7 innings without a wicket is not something we'd like to hear about our strike bowler (Zaheer of course has become unfit quite often, so this statement).

2011 was a good year considering India played West Indies twice (where Ishant took 27 wickets in just 6 tests). And WI were no.8 in 2011 also :)

The main point is not bashing Ishant here. It is only that he has failed to live upto his best, which I felt was earlier to 2011. 1.6 wickets per match may be just less than Zaheer, but nothing to feel very proud of... And if Ishant was better than Zaheer, it would be a case of having a great strike bowler (which is not the case now)..

i quite agree that ishant takes less no. of wickets than we expect...and it is quite natural to get peeved about it...the only thing that can be said in his favour is since we use spinners more on indian wickets and give them more overs probability of their taking wickets naturally increases...

in the above context i would like to present some more stats for your perusal...you will be surprised when you see the whole thing from another perspective...

kumble 132 tests 619 wickets
harbhajan 101 tests 413 wickets
pragyan ojha 24 tests 113 wickets...quite impressive figures you would agree....

but now for the twist in the tale...kumble strike rate 65.9, harbhajan strike rate 68.5 ojha strike rate 67.5...and what about ishant? ishant strike rate 69.7
btw amit mishra has taken 43 wickets in 13 tests and strike rate? 81.3!!

wonder whether you ever thought from this angle:)

Thats fine, I dont mean to compare a fast bowler and spinner. I took the recent performance of Ishant into account (2 years).. If only SR was the criteria to pick people, I would prefer Yadav or Praveen Kumar

True yadav and praveen kumar have better strike rates...and i was very surprised that praveen kumar has been ignored for so long...but i suppose this is due some disciplinary action taken against him because of his constant flare ups on the field in domestic cricket...

Yep, sometimes I wonder if Praveen acted more insanely than Sreesanth :). Although I remember Praveen being termed mentally ill (or something like that) in 2012.. And as you say, it is no surprise if Zak breaks down after bowling a couple of overs given his track record :). I believe this should be his last chance to make it big again, he has lost weight and supposedly has practiced a lot..

and yes like the other seniors i suppose zaheer also should be out of the team soon for our team to develop...yes the main problem with him he is not so fit and his breaking down with some injury while the match is going on has proved detrimental to us many times...

Good statistics. But a point is while for spinners strike rate improves as they mature, for pacers it actually comes down due to age factor. And also fitness is a factor- Varun and Yadav have already broken down so frequently, while Srinath never did. Ofcourse Kapil was mighty fit, matched to an extent by Tendulkar (batsmen but still). Ojha, Ashwin have had a great start but need to be carefully and patiently handled if we want them to be long term prospects.
