Dhoni should have retired after Test series: Prasanna
by wcpak on Dec 30, 2014 10:52 PM  | Hide replies

Australia have already won the series. If Dhoni had made up his mind that this will be his last test series,it is all the more sensible not to play the last test and leave it to the captain-in-waiting Kohli and to the next wicket keeper. It will be a good experience to Kohli and also to the new wicket keeper. I feel it was the correct decision.

I strongly suspect dressing room atmosphere turned against him, with Shastri, calling the shots and Virat going ballistic..

Dhoni's retirement in the middle of the series is quite understandable. He wants to go out on a high. Remember he has scored 11 & 24 Not Out in his last test match. If he has played one more match, he might have feared he would have got a golden duck. Hence his decision. :-)

The correction to Prasanna's statement is that Dhoni should have retired after the two 4-0 white-ashes in England and Australia.

Dhoni's retirement
by Ashish Kumar on Dec 30, 2014 10:49 PM  | Hide replies

is an astute decision from an astute captain. A lot of people were blaming him for his poor overseas record, putting the blame on him for it on his 'defensive' captaincy. No one bothered to see how his batsmen and bowlers performed on these tours. I feel Dhoni gave Kohli an opportunity to show-case his aggressive captaincy in the First Test which resulted in an avoidable defeat. He has now given Kohli another opportunity to prove his own point silently that no captain can win if the players play the way they have been playing. The result in Sydney is a forgone conclusion. At the end of the series the critics would realise that after all Dhoni was not the one who was to blame for the poor run of Indian Team in oversea matches.
Well done Dhoni!

True, Why Blame Dhoni any way, If their is no team spirt among players, Dhoni can only try to keep the team together and make the best possible of a difficult situation.
Looking at the records in the cricket almanac (the official cricket performance book) Dhoni has been and is the best captain India had for a long time.
Yes Well done Dhoni, You are the best. where as Kohli needs to learn a lot yet. including controlling his temper.

When Sachin, Saurav, VVS & Dravid formed the core of the Indian batting lineup and while the Indian team was winning, Dhoni was lauded by one and all for his so called astute captaincy. You have not felt unfair about it. Now that the team is loosing, it is only fair to blame his captaincy.

Good Decision
by Satish K on Dec 30, 2014 10:00 PM  | Hide replies

His decision is perfectly okay, and why to wait till the end of series when the series has been decided already. If Australia were say just 1-0 up and the third test drawn, then he might have played the last decider Test.
It is better to hand over the reins to Kohli in this scenario, don't teams try out few new faces from the bench when series have been decided?

The analogy that I put across above has not seeped into your head.
What I have said is that when Test or ODI series get decided in favor of one team with matches still to play, both teams give a chance to the bench, i.e. the players who were not tried in the earlier matches. These are not necessarily newcomers.
Similarly in the case of captaincy, with the series already settled it makes sense for Dhoni to let Kohli take over and give him another chance for glory after coming so close in Adelaide.

...quitting before series ends
by Bodh Ramdeo on Dec 30, 2014 09:38 PM  | Hide replies

Quitting now seems a bit rash. Maybe he should have waited till the end of the series to make his announcement.
Maybe quitting now saves him from further embarrassment should they lose the fourth test...someone else gets to take that blame?

Dhoni was hardly in charge. Kohli had already taken over the reins. Recall the way Kohli sledged and fought in the field. Clearly, Kohli had gone beyond Dhoni's control/guidance. Kohli could not have done so without tacit approval from Shastri. In such a situation Dhoni did the right thing by quitting before being humiliated by the BCCI.

Virat Kohli
by Vikram Sheth on Dec 30, 2014 09:17 PM  | Hide replies

I am glad Dhoni retired. Most of his decisions were not working. Many a times a team selection, bowling changes, field placements, his way of batting, instilling discipline of players on and off the field, etc. left a lot to be desired and led to India's poor showing at least in the current series in Australia. V. Kohli, next in line needs to learn about discipline on the field and he can do even better than his present performance.

How do you rate captain Kohli's performance in the First Test. India suffered a perfectly avoidable defeat and Kohli said he was feeling proud. We should just see how, with right approach, India saved the Third Test. There is difference between being aggressive and foolhardy. Indian Team will see more of it in coming days.

by G Ramani Iyer on Dec 30, 2014 09:07 PM

Success and failure does effect all players..particularly Test cricketers and more so for Captain.
If he does not perform people ant him to hang his boots....If he says'enough-no more' and quit...Still people want him for two more tests to two years.
MS Doni Sir, your a gentleman and truly also. Be an patriotic of high integrity and expose all the wrong doings in BCCI
You have nothing to worry-at-all!!!
Finally you will be wise enough not to be MP and write book..... You see Poor Sachin Tendulkar.
Happy Family life...You speak English and Hindi well come and replace that old guards Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Harsh Bhogle and others - who speak like dictators, monarch and a kind of tycoon/buffoons.
Infuse fresh air...Good wishes MSD Sir!!!
