Sachin, Sachin, Sachin....somehow the game and name of cricket got eclipsed by such a phenomenon calked S.R Tendulkar. It is natural, but imagine this event happening at the back drop of Olympics, it could have brought the things in perspective. In India, Pakistan , Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cricket had somehow hijacked the sporting psyche of these ex colonies of Britain. While other cricketing nation have not lost their sight on major benchmark events like Olympics, for reason not really known to average Indians, Idol worshiping is matter of national time pass, backed by medias hype. In China, no one knows who won the Olympic Gold or Noble Prize for Literature, it is just given. Perform or get lost. I am lost somehow. Never the less it us matter of pride to see some one raising name of India in some area at least.
I am a cricket fan. I am also a very ardent fan of Sachin but I equally admire the other greats like Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly, Kumble, Kapildev etc., I enjoy a good innings whether it was played by Sachin, Dravid, Dhoni, Rohit, Ganguly or whoever. Having said that, I really feel this is a big moment because Sachin has created such a big impact on Indian cricket fans and I fully respect that and I am not concerned about the hype. Though it may irritate a few people, its an expression of feelings from certain sections of cricket lovers and we should respect that. Its not an impression that would harm anybody.
However, what is more disturbing is the comments of Sachin vs Dravid, Sachin vs Laxman, Sachin vs Lara vs Ponting etc., For those who spend time on making those comments, I wanted to share some of my thoughts. The people you compare were both successful. They inspire so many people. If you are making this up because you do not want to follow a person as your role model, you have the right to choose. But, this particular mindset of playing down a person's achievement is not good for your own personal development. Very likely(I emphasize likely because I hate prejudice), you would not align with some set of achievers in your workplace, family or friends circle. Lets learn to appreciate all Indian achievers. We have something to learn from all greats. They all make India proud.
