I can understand Gavaskar's comments. Sons of the soil. He has never had a criticism of Sachin, what ever may have been the utter failures of Sachin, series after series.

Isn't that our loss? The best batsman in the world in his era left quietly. And did not receive the acknowledgement that was his due, when he was out in his last innings, battling Pakistani spin on a spiteful pitch. He played a monumental innings, but India lost, and so the crowd did not understand the import of seeing their then greatest batsman going out in the sunset. But his swansong at Lords in a friendly MCC fixture showed him in full flow, scoring a peerless century like only he could.

Sunil Gavaskar was and to date remains the greatest test batsman that I have seen in action. Everyone else can only play second fiddle.

As one of the greatest fans of Kapil Dev Nikhanj, I should still say that Kapil deserved it on that occasion. He violated the team principle for his personal hooray and ended up paying the price for that. It was a right decision to take.
