Two Changes in DRS
by Srivatsan S on Aug 05, 2013 12:37 PM

1. LBW ball tracking should be removed, however can assist the actual umpire whether the any inside edge or no ball, other factors expect ball tracking to wicket
2. No of reviews to be changed. Either each wrong review will cause 5 penalty runs or Coach or match referee will take control of reviewing each wicket or appeal.

REPLACE PLAYERS REFERRALS WITH 3RD UMPIRES' INTERVENTIONS
by damodaran mohan on Aug 04, 2013 06:20 PM

(contd..)Brodcaster’s feed replay based system has been found to be grossly inadequate and to be done away with completely as there could be mistakes and not authentic. Best is to have 3rd umpire based independent replay system for decision making. Further, referrals by .players have also been found to be creating lots of heart burn once the no. of referrals are exhausted and the umpires give wrong decision subsequently. This completely vitiates the environment worse than wrong decisions given by umpires w/o DRS system in place. Also, in the first Ashes TEST it was seen that Umpires are not taking kindly to reversal of decisions to referrals by players when the players get it right. Umpires need to be trained suitably to take it in stride the reversals and not make a prestige or ego issue out of it.It is also seen that often 3rd umpire is reluctant to reverse decision of field umpire even in the face of ample evidence as witnessed in case of Khwaja’s wrong decision of ‘caught’ in the 3rd TEST. Given this background of operational glitches it is best to do away with ‘players referrals’ and for devising a system of 3rd umpire’s interventions having the authority of review of ‘self referrals’ based on his judgment of field umpires doubtful/close decisions with independent ‘feed’ and not from broadcaster. DRS based on players’ referrals should be discontinued.

DRS STILL UNDER PROCESS OF EVOLUTION
by damodaran mohan on Aug 04, 2013 06:08 PM

Recalling an old umpire is not the solution .Rather the technical committee must come out with permanent solutions. Actually given the level of confusion seen in the DRS during the current Ashes series it is evident the DRS is still under the process of evolution While use of technology is good for cricket but unfortunately the technology based DRS is being introduced by the highest cricketing body of the world, ICC in the most shoddy and unprofessional manner. First condition, Technology must be enhanced to improve accuracy which is going to be the heart of DRS. That includes the accuracy of Hot spot, ball tracker and multiple angle cameras for close calls on doubtful decisions on catches , run outs, stumping etc. However it must be accepted that there cannot be 100% perfection and that DRS is only a tool to help field umpires improve decision making as close to perfection as possible. Next comes the more important application part and DRS will be only as good as its effective and the right manner of application. For that the system has to be defined and all the umpires suitably trained to operate the system w/o causing confusion. More the DRS is mired in confusion greater the objection to its acceptability going to be.
