what is your batting position = 6
how many innings you must have played ..approx 200 something?
how many times indias top order/middle order must have failed providing you with crunch situations ? ...atleast around 50 ?
And now how many time you must have delivered in those crunch situations? 5, 10 ,15 ,20?

..i dont recall more than 10-15 innings that VVS has batted under crunch or pressure situation that resulted in us winning or saving the match

I am not trying to prove that laxman doesn't play well in crunch situations, just that the fact that laxman plays well in crunch situations is highly exagerrated

Salil: you are missing the point here. Understand, that just saving or winning a game is not that important. Holding the position, scoring more than 8000 runs, from that position is important. For you it may be exagerration. What is important are those memorable innings, which were crucial for India, either to save the test or win the test and those crucial innings were much more worth than the actual numbers.

Let me put is the other way round: How many runs Sachin has scored... well no guessing..? right? How many innings, when Sachin failed and India won? Many.. because of strong support from other team members.

Or turn the table now: How many matches India has won, when Sachin scored a century.. Well statistics dont lie.

Reality check: When Sachin scored it went to his account and when others scored, India won. Including the recent world cup when Yuvraj, Gautam and Dhoni played and won the match and gifted to Sachin.

That is the point.

Salil, it is the situation in which he played, which makes the innings look real-than-life. All these innings were almost like "point of no return". To win matches from such a position is nothing less than a magic.

The 167 runs mentioned by you was in a losing cause at Sydney, Australia in 2000. But no doubting the fact that he was one of our best & most dependable batsman.

The Last of the stylish batsmen

Laxman was a treat to watch. His effortless strokes, his mastery over his skill and the confidence with which he played the Aussie Bowlers were simply too good. I am sure there are many cricket lovers like me who would wait to see Laxman bat. Laxman on song was the world's best batsman. He would caress the ball like a master and not thump or hit it at such.
Off late, however his batting style did suffer..because of age & fitness.
Innumerable times that he saved India from defeat and won matches for India.
Still remember how he scored 3 centuries in ODIs in Australia in 1 week.
Still remember how he and Ishant Sharma won that Test match against Aussie.
For me and scores of other cricket lovers, the greatest batsman India has ever produced. We are proud that you took retirement at the right time, to pave the way for youngsters who would become future Laxmans!!

farewell match shud be mandatory for great players
by pup on Sep 06, 2012 06:54 PM  | Hide replies

why great batsman like dravid and laxman did not get farewell match....BCCI should make it mandatory for all players with 100 test matches to be given a farewell match....so that they can bid goodbye with dignity and honour....and for the sake of fans to celebrate their careers...

Yes, when Gawaskar called it a day, he scored 100 in Lords.. But the matches before, he failed miserably. It is not about "LAST" matches, it is about when you want to call it a day. Gawaskar, being selfish waited for the day. Drawid and VVS did not do that. That is the difference.

In Fab 5 (Kumble, Laxman, Dravid, Sachin and Ganguly), it's only Laxman who took the retirement at right time. He is 3rd best test batsman of India after Gavaskar and Dravid.

Rathore, I dont think Laxman took at the right time. His avg was 20 or 21 on 2 abroad tours. So, it was like an open secret that he HAD to go.....

what do you exactly mean at right time?
if its at peak then it was only gavaskar...otherwise both dravid and laxman took it when they were on a downward spiral...1 mroe bad series and they would have been kicked out...

more apt to say dravid and laxman took retirement smartly...

next on the line is Sachin...

As someone pointed out on the forum abut Dravid, I guess he took retirement considering a "valley" in his fielding & catching abilities. But yes, as far as I remember, Gavaskar was the only one to retire at a time in which he would be "missed". I feel Kumble retired from ODIs in a timely manner.

mere baap that was once in a blue moon innings...and he could not finish it anyway...here was golden chance to show he could finish the game...but with 20 runs required in 3 overs and with inexperienced tail enders left he should have taken the responsibilty and stayed till the end...

anybody else like dhoni yuvi rain kohli would have stayed till the end in 8 out of 10 times in such situations...while sachin at the most stays only 2 times out of 10 till the end insuch situations....

we saw how sachin played against NZ 8th ranked team in india...and you singing praises of him hahaha:) moron see sachin score and dhoni's score....because of dhoni we won the tight chase and he showed that even if laxman was not there we can still win in such situations/..in contrast what could sachin do? he should try playing gully cricket...though it is still hard to imagine that he can succeed even there...hahaha...:)

mere baaap sachin fails most of the times under pressure...when he makes centuries it is when the track is 350-400 runs kind or when the target is modest like between 180-240 runs. at such times he hits his patent centuries...give him difficult pitches or difficult targets he rarely plays well....at such times he most of the time either fails or flatters to deceive...he either makes zero or goes near the finishing line but falls down exhausted before crossing it...:)

Dear Sunil,
So you think that Ravindra Jadeja is a tailender as SRT didnt win match chasing 351.

Also you always write that SRT scores a ton when target is between 180-240 but you forget that he has many 90n 100 too when target is 240plus, but perhaps you dont even know numbers beyond 240.
Also tell me how many batsmen have scored even 90 when target is 270plus.

I can give you a no. of examples when SRT stood in difficult situations and quality bowling attack. Go and watch highlights of WC03 in SA against pak, when SRT thrashed worlds bestbowlers and finished match in 25 overs.

sachin made nearly on his runs on flat tracks assisting batsmen whether in india or abroad,..but when he gets pitches assisting bowlers or faces difficult totals he fails most of the times in india and away...:)

Badri just does not have the temperament to play at the highest level. He will forever remain a top class Ranji Trophy player. He was given opportunities in the West Indies but did not capitalize on them. Unfortunately for him age is also not on his side as he is already 33 years.
