The former cricketer was expressing his views at the panel discussion titled 'Cricket across all formats' arranged by Legends Club on the occasion of former India opener, late Vijay Merchant's, 101st birth anniversary in Mumbai [ Images ] on Saturday.

Thanking Merchant, the then selection panel chairman who elevated him to India captaincy for the tour of the West Indies [ Images ] in 1971 with his casting vote, Wadekar recalled how Merchant subtly told him that he would like him only if he was victorious as captain.

Why do rediff articles contain ridiculously long sentences by concatenating 5 or 6 smaller sentences. This long winded way of writing does not prove that the author is cool, sophisticated and is complete master of English. Rather it only irritates the readers to no end. It is becoming really boring before one has not even reached half way point it the article. It is really amateurish.

Please understand that even sports have their own economics. When one-day matches were introduced, it meant a viable alternative to a five-day, long-drawn out event, which fewer & fewer people have the time, energy or patience to watch. From the investor's perspective, if an investor can make money in sponsoring 20 overs, why would he sponsor long-winded test cricket? Cricket - and for that matter - any sport is now a business and should be treated as such - and keep esoteric things like National honour out of it. Playing 'cricket for the country' is an outdated concept, dating back to provincial attitudes and era where things used to work on 'your territory' and 'my territory' principles. It now works on 'your team' and 'my team' principles. Look at US - do they have a United States baseball team? No - they have a National level league, where commercially oriented teams compete. Same with football, rugby....anbd this is where cricket is headed too! Please tell Mr. Wadekar not to ruminate over a dead and redundant ideology!

Peculiar usage

Lately Media has started using the word SLAM, a dime to the dozen.Anna SLAMS this and that,Ramdev SLAMS him and her,Kejriwal SLAMS it and them,BJP SLAMS UPA over and these and those, etc etc. When I was a child if EVER anyone got SLAMMED for anything, would mean the END OF THE LINE for that guy.Now-a-days it spells just the BEGINNING UNENDING and USELESS discussions. Why cant media use other words like QUESTIONS,REPROVES,DISAPPROVES,EXPRESSES DISMAY etc etc.I think the new header and footer writers are exposing there limited vocabulary.Sad but true.

Right

Wadekar is right. Players such as Sehwag and Sachin who tend to give various reasons to skip national duty like injury, family etc stand in front row when it is IPL & TTwenty matches. Has Sehwag ever enthusiastic to reveal his fitness before like how he announced in media about his "100 percent" fitness? When it comes to money the nation and its love sadly takes a back row. Wadekar is right.

SEE HOW REDIFF HAS MANIPULATED THE HEADLINE

See how Rediff has manipulated the headline to sick players when Mr. Wadekar only told that players reported sick for test matches maybe on purpose only maybe.

@ Pradeep

I don't find any manipulation in the title vis-a-vis the article. There is good relevance between the two. Not sure where you find manipulation.
