All the best to Dhoni & also salute Ganguly

Both had different ways to look at life but both were successful - both good players (but not great) but great captains - both were very good things to have happened for Indian Cricket in recent times - proud of you both as Indian Cricket Fans.

Dhoni's record is based on senior players
by Nikhil Shah on Nov 20, 2012 06:02 AM  | Hide replies

From 2000 onwards, the arrival of Sehwag, Yuvraj, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Nehra and later on Dhoni himself and Raina were groomed by Ganguly who took over the reigns of Cricket in an abysmal state.

Dhoni wasted too many matches on players like RP Singh, Praveen Kumar and now of late delayed the development of genuine pace like Aaron and Yadav.

Just in the recent Tests he was pushing for Spin which almost back-fired and allowed England a 400 total.

India after 2000 had enough talent and seems to have reached the peak with the arrival of Pujara. Until the captain almost messed up a double century effort from Pujara.

The 8-0 overseas defeat will continue of Dhoni does not make amends and gets backups for Zaheer, Ishant and top order pair which looks very crucial.

India seriously need to look at how the youngters can find places in the eleven. Rahane, Rohit, Tiwari are potentially world class and Aaron the quickest to emerge in recent times not in the selectors Radar for any of the Tests.

The West Indies and NZ tours to India were a golden chance for the selectors to try out the talent waiting in the wings before it embarked on another overseas tour to avoid disastor.

dont compare dhoni with Great legend DADA.. Look the stats out of 21 many in overseas.. but for dhoni most record from india. he build the team strongly like viru, yuvi, bhaji, gauti, zaheer..This generation playing lot of cricket like IPL, Champions league, etc.. but those daysno such analysis.. for me always dada is best.. he build the sprit of the team, found right combination 7 plus 4 ,Dhoni is a player, Ganguly is legend..

Good Job Dhoni

Very soon we will see Dhoni becoming the most successful captian for India. Dhoni has won T20 world cup, 50 over World cup and been #1 in test not long ago...apart from winning IPL twice and champions leage.....thats an achievement which is hard to beat for any Indian captian. No doubt Ganguly and others were successful captions but Dhoni leads by example and is a great strategist.

Yes completely agree & Dhoni came in a fresh breath of air around the uncertain times India faced after Ganguly's spat with Greg Chappel. In my opinion that idiot took away at least 2 more years of Ganguly's career as captain, lost a great bowler in Irfan Pathan temporarily & created a lot of confusion in the dressing room. Dhoni came in & along with Kumble, steadied the ship & has gone on to become a great captain for India. A rare brand of success as he delivers with the bat consistently, plays always to the situation & has a cool demeanour on the field. Indian cricket is in safe hands for now & hopefully guys like Virat Kohli will develop into the kind of individuals that can carry the mantle forward after Dhoni - he has shown he is capable & has a good head on his shoulders!

Statistics could be deceiving..
by Jaguar on Nov 20, 2012 01:28 AM  | Hide replies

Interesting.. Dhoni lost 8 test matches in a row.. a record for a top ranked team these days.. and yet to he's just 1 shy of matching Ganguly's most test wins who is undoubtebly the best test captain for India in the modern era.. well, statistics..!

Successful Ganguly never took India to #1 in tests....never won a world cup and was not good enough to play T20......bitter truth...

Among 49 tests Ganguly captained, he won 21, lost 13
Among 40 test Dhoni captained, he won 20, lost 10
May be Ganguly didnt loose 8 continuous matches, but still has a poor record compared to Dhoni.

I am not saying Ganguly is a bad captain. I 100% agree, he is the best captain India had. But dont take the credit from Dhoni as well. He is doing the best thing, he can do in the current situation.

I am still not able to believe after winning the World cup, he gave the cup to him teammates and was standing in a corner. No one has done this.. not cricket, in any other sports.
Lets give correct credit everyone.

continuous loss of 8 tests came immidiately after the World cup win...when all players were mentally and physically tired of excessive cricket...and if u take away the bad form and adjusting to a new coach then the record is far more impressive than any other captain. i do believe that Gangulu was a good caption but Dhoni has proved to be better and even statistics are on Dhonis side.

statistics are directly comparable. Ganguly had Kapil dev, Gavaskar, Azhar to emulate, and Dhoni had Ganguly to emulate. Also its known that the time when these two folks stepped up with the responsibility was very different. One can say that at the time of Aurangzheb the moghul empireship was the largest but it's Akbar who was the best emperor.

(apology for strong opinion)

also they broke down DURING the match...if your two best opening batsmen gambhir and sehwag plus two bowlers bhajji and zaheer down and that too in course of the match even gods cannot do anything...

also dhoni did nt lose 8 tests the correct figure is 7 tests...sehwag was captain the 8th test loss when dhoni was banned for one test fr slow overate...dhoni not there as a captain or as a player...still no change in result...

Lame excuses as usual. Wonder why Cook could not think of all these excuses when his team lost 5-0 to India?

Statistics is like mini skirt, hiding more (read negatives) than they reveal or at times reveals more (read positives) than they hide.
That doesn't mean statistics (or min skirts) are ineffective, they are in this world for such a long time.

well what I meant to say although Ganguly was an aggressive captain for team India, Dhoni is more shrewd and had produced results. 20-30 years from now more people will remember the T20 win, world cup win, #1 status and whatever the next India’s achievements (maybe 4-0 win with English & 4-0 or 3-0 against Aussie). I wish Dhoni all success.
