Cricket, a truly noble game: a myth!
by Jayanth on May 22, 2012 02:01 PM  | Hide replies

Cricket's basic tenets may dictate that its a gentleman's game played in the true spirit of sportsmanship. But, when people refer to the past, what past are we talking about. At what period of time, did such ideals ever exist or were practised. In the early 30s to 40s you had the bodyline era. Then over the years, there were controversies or incidents as the writer himself has noted. Its one thing to have ideals, its another to practise them. And its worse when you keep dreaming there was this honourable period in the past when the game was played for whatever NOBLE reason. If there was an opportunity to make money, the cricketers of that period would have scarce hesitated to take that route. So, its not ideals, but, a lack of opportunities that created the so called "Noble situation"

Useless article

I think it is wronly perceived that cricket should embody "gentlemenship" as a virtue or character. Now this was the case when in old times England and Aussies were dominating and terming the game as gentleman's game. But when you bring down the game to just three hours and 40 overs it is no more than a extended football match. Are Euro foot ball "gentlemanly"? There is not much difference between cricket and football in that context.

In shorter forms any sport will have to be played aggresively because of lack of time. Adrelaine is running high. Sorry, there is no place for anything else other than winning....

IPL - Is it a Sport?
by Manoj Adwani on May 21, 2012 09:13 PM  | Hide replies

Can IPL be regarded as a sport in the first place? Cricket or for that matter every sport has got so much money riding on it that it has become common that players especially of team sports are involved in bad behavior towards the opponents, refrees and sometimes in open fights only. Cricket is a gentlemans game was created by Englishman which is absolutely wrong. All games have produced players who have made their name as exemplary sportsman who played their games with honesty and sporting spirit and will always be remembered for that

One bad series performance abroad and the media starts attacking IPL. Somewhere down the line, we do realize that they're right. It seems all this tamasha is made up; it is a publicity stunt simply made up to revive people's interest in IPL which is all time low. Rather than buying this shameful tactics, bcci should organize IPL once in two years; that way, players will get ample rest and media will not be able train its guns on IPL at drop of a hat.
