The threat of injury in modern day cricket
by pradeep agarwal on Mar 07, 2012 12:52 PM  | Hide replies

It is beyond my comprehension as to why a fast bowler with 6-6" frame should dive at the boundary & get injured to save one run? The fast bowlers job is to take wickets & be in outfield to take catches & throw the ball back quickly. The fielding coaches encouraging needless diving for TRP has crippled many fast bowlers careers & should be prevented by team management.

What a wonderful point man! This has to be highlighted in media and should be conveyed to the team managements/players.

Going by your suggestion, I think bowlers can sit in the dug-out and should come to the field only during the over they bowl. The fielding position can be occupied by a specialist-fielder/substitutes. He can dive, kick, strain whatever he wants. E.g., in our team we can use somebody like Jadeja for this as he is considered as a superb fielder! He is anyway in the team with his bits-and-piece talent! So we can risk him getting injured diving for the ball...

So every team should be allowed 2 such substitutes on the field, and so 2 prime bowlers can be asked to sit in the dig-out when they are not bowling, and instead they can be allowed to bowl 12 or 15 overs instead of regular 10 overs. In that way we can eradicate the need of 5th bowler.
