This is becoming something of a joke actually. HOWEVER the economics of this is bad because cash-strapped clubs or lesser cricket playing countries with not much finance would find this expensive to use 2 new white_balls and difficult to play competitive associate nation cricket . it would not be implemented in their domestic circuit due to this.

even though 50 overs won't be extinct anytime soon, but cricket consistently gets low crowds, so much tweaking is taking away the charm from odi cricket. champions trophy is a great tournament with many cricketing memories, some innovations were utilized in an edition or two as well (like even for lbw umpires could refer to 3rd umpire , although this wasn't successful because of stu_pid clauses) . it's a shame this great tourney would see its end after 2013. The world test championship is a separate format and issue. but wait a minute, instead of a 'world test championship', why doesn't the bcci revive the Asian test championship, remember?

because that would make continuous 15 overs powerplay like old times, and they made it to be taken within 40 overs considering the final ten overs would be an assault anyway. However, the problem is, it has not made any dramatic difference to the scoring, besides, the bowling team takes the bowling_pp as soon as it is allowed (16-20) , and the batting team takes the powerplay when it is compulsory to take at the very end (36-40) . So,_pp's_have been overrated nonsense as far as i'm concerned.

Now they have proposed doing away with the bowling powerplay, which makes 15 ovrs powerplay. Now this makes me go back to what Odi cricket without_pp was , 15 overs! it's just you won't be taking it in (11-15), but those 5 overs of batting_pp in middle overs isn't worth all these experiements, this is what odis have come to? disappointing.

However, I do like the change of allowing 2 bouncers in over in odi , would like to see that, that would be exciting . The two new_balls which we have currently would be exciting with the 2 bouncers per over move i.e. for the faster bowlers. but even so we've already seen whining by some fast bowlers, saying the ball isn't be as old to reverse swing, and some attributing this reason for pak's defeat to england in the recent odi series. But hey!, if faster bowlers whine about the 2 new_balls what about the spinners, which rely on the old ball?

Consistently changing the laws of the ODI format is bad, and it shows they're still experimenting and haven't found the recipe to revive odi's, but wait a minute, why would you revive something that was fine? In my opinion, I liked the ODI format i grew up with, which had nothing of these 'powerplays' , instead had first 15 overs of field restrictions, then you had the partnership forming middle overs (16-40), and an assault would start in the last 10 overs (you see on 'surface' this is just 15 overs of 'powerplay', but it is 25 overs of 'powerplay' adding the final 10 over assault , but even so if you wouldn't see many scores in excess of 250, it's because of the mindset prevailing then, that was a big enough score. it's only with the advent of T20 the dynamics of the game changed and now 250 is not even a par score on batting surfaces).

But ICC found the middle overs to be too boring for odi cricket, so they introduced powerplay in an attempt to increase scoring in these middle overs, and thus you have so many changes, currently played with 20 overs , but admittedly icc has said powerplays have largely been a failure, it has not made the game any more dynamic , plus there is no excitement or strategy or thinking in adopting powerplay by the teams. they all want to be safe. powerplays between 16-40 overs was brought in because icc wanted to avoid the bowling team taking powerplay from 11-15 overs ,

(contd.)

Much depends on what ICC is trying to accomplish

What is ICC's goal? Revitalize the game in existing countries, or look for newer pastures? This may well deicde what they should be doing looking ahead.
