This aus team is a shadow of its previous teams that dominated world cricket, though there's still hope owing to the aussie grit and cricketing talent. But what with the new gen of pacers getting injured. Cummins back from injury, is injured again in just an ODI spell, unbelievable, pattinson where's pattinson? injured yes. Brett lee is still good but age and injuries make him nowhere close to what he was a decade back. Johnson comeback, oh great, but what? >6 an over. In the batting dept. Aus is missing the older hussey who's back home for the birth of his child.

Of course in the midst of this, England's playing well too. They got world class seamers who can exploit the English conditions to maximum effect. Plus noone's missing KP for now as england's batting is clicking. morgan, bopara , bell etc.

No 1 team..
by Santhanam on Jul 02, 2012 11:04 AM  | Hide replies

People who are doubting England's position as Number 1 saying that they have majorly played in their own backyard fail to realize that 'India' had done the same thing when they became Number 1 in Tests, playing most of their matches in Flat tracks of India. England are all set to complete the whitewash over Aussies. They deserve being number 1 in ODIs too in Current form.

Rightly pointed out that India were winning in subcontinent at that time but
I do not think Eng can sweep the series vs AUS

What kind of rankings are these?????
by Vandana Chiniwalla on Jul 02, 2012 10:56 AM  | Hide replies

If England win a meaningless one day series against Australia at home, they become no.1

But if India win the world cup at home, they become only no.2

Biased rankings!!!!!!!

I actually agree with you, it's an issue of placing what tourneys are important. I'm not a fan of bilateral odi/t20 series. I'm all for triangular/multi-nation odi/t20 tournaments . So yes, to me as well playing a meaningless bilateral tour serves no purpose , playing the same team again and again for limited overs after a two-day/three day gap is rather boring. do you remember much from these series?

They should curb the bilateral odi/t20 series to the minimum and promote effective tournaments. The ICC already banned a GREAT tournament champions trophy (2013 edition will be the last) which is nonsense and i don't buy their excuse.

Your theory is good, places more importance to better tournaments and awards points on that scale..However we're far from implementing it on various accounts, first off if anything changes the point system has to change to award more for a win overseas. f.ex every test win abroad for any nation is GOLD. but cricket is far from implementing such things yet. Although the Elo ranking type is just in nascent stages. It works for other sports, not much in cricket though.

They did have plenty of 3 nation tourneys back then, consider late 80s and 90s, early 00s consider sharjah etc. consider natwest series (this series) which was originally a tri-nation series. The australian summer has a great tradition of tri nation tourneys . we saw the CB series(erstwile VB, carlton & united etc. etc.) . but this was the first tri nation series since 2008? (correct me if i'm wrong)

champions trophy is great but it should be played and decided in 2 weeks , not like the one they had in India in 2006 which was for one month.
CT will be great if played every 3 yrs.
True we do have meningless bilateral series which have as many as 7 games like Ind Aus or Aus vs eng in the recent past

I do not like this trend that in almost every series you have to play all 3 formats. You get tests, which is sprinkled with odis/t20s. to me, this is devaluing all forms, more so the shorter formats.

but like eng tour of Uae where they played 3 tests 4 odi and 3 t20 was right balance.
However 3 tests 5 odi and 3 t20 b/w Eng SA is not that great with they being top ranked in tests

hmm I feel a 'full tour' with all 3 forms is devaluing them. Although the results of the UAE tour were interesting, and I do admit to enjoy watching some of that series. But still, it gave us a paradox and i believe that's nonsense. England lost all 3 games in tests, but came back to win all 4 games in ODI's. It may be great from a statistical and economic point of view, but as a fan, it's like whoa, who actually won that tour? this is why time separate the forms and not have them always. but alas, more and more administrators are advocating full tours, i dunno why, i read gavaskar saying he would like a full tour of indo-pak games. i'm like wtf??!

However, eng's series with SA, yes that's gonna be great, but would've wanted it to be 4 tests instead of 3 . cricket administrators really need to look into it and reduce meaningless ODI's and increase the number of tests.

Every series matters , if they start giving rankings based on WC however important it would not be true reflection of teams.
Consistency matters, what has India achieved after WC ? Absolutely nothing

Just think how many such "meaningless" series India had to play and win at home to become #1 in tests.....

morgan(born in ireland), bopara and samit(indian origin), kieswetter(south african born), dernbach(born in south africa), SO its world eleven vs aus, even chennai super kings is difficult to beat in comparison, it its pure english eleven then even kenya can thrash them

If England win 5-0 then they become No1 in Odi cricket straight from No4.
If it happens then it will be the first time a team would be No1 in all 3 formats of the game.

I said IF , there is no guarantee that Eng will win next 3 games since it is the No1 team Aus they are playing and unlike Dhoni's India who surrendered their No1 status in Tests easily to Eng last yr Aus will fight till the very end.
But Still I would be very happy to see Eng being No1 and someone taking over the top spot from Aus after so many yrs.
