Having lost 7 Tests in the row outside India and NZ ability to draw the series recently, India needs to look in the area of sports psychology.
The mental edge was not present and areas of motivation, self-belief, confidence and composure under pressure. The seniors have not any trouble over the years. Sehwag and Gambhir have to able to score and give India the starts even outside India, but there could be another problem India was probably facing:
Team cohesion.
If the players don't like each other the rift between players can affect team dynamics. The problem the team suffered was task cohesion and social cohesion. Social cohesion is when team members get along towards a common goal and cohesive tasks is collective effort by team members.
Another problem was burnout, which results in boredom, over-training and injuries. The expectations from millions of fans and the media also results in burn-out. This could cause emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced sense of accomplishment. The schedules by the BCCI can be the reason.
All these issues cannot be handled overnight and trying to improve the mental advantage is one area of weakness the Indians can address.
