Much ado about nothing

First of all, I don't understand why the Aussie selectors continued to pick Ponting for almost 1 year after the last world cup ended. Common sense dictates that he is too old to be around for the next world cup. So why persist with him? They could have had a quiet word with him right after the world cup ended last year and persuaded him to bow out of ODIs. But surprisingly, they retained him in the ODI squad. On the other hand, Ponting is a most stubborn individual who refuses to see the writing on the wall. No matter how bad his form, he refused to go out on his own. Finally, the Aussie selectors have done the right thing by dropping him.
Now, can the Indian selectors do the same with the stubborn legends that refuse to bow out gracefully? Of course they love cricket but they should also show some respect for the sport by vacating the spots they are forcefully holding onto. I have much respect for Muralitharan who announced his last match and then achieved the record of 800 test wickets in that very last match. Whether or not he achieved the record, he was going to bow out. Contrast that to the selfish record seeing of the so called champion Tendulkar.
And then, there are Dravid and Laxman who were probably hoping for one last hurrah in the Oz tour but having failed miserably in that series, they refuse to retire. Indian selectors need to man up and dump these dead-weight "legends" right away.

btw, such oldies r neither doing justice to themselves nor to ind ckt, n they r unnecessarily blocking the spot of youngsters, inspite of playing for 23 years, n minting crores of money.

Well said. Sachin has an outstanding statistical record as a batsman but in terms of wins achieved, he pales in comparison to Ponting.
