In early mid 80's when I was about 10 years old, I was never really a fan of cricket. Never really sat down and watched the full game. Then after few year, started hearing about a 16yr old boy taking on big guys. Though he use to play a very short cameo as he would come after 5 or 6 down, he was quite interesting to watch. Suddenly I started liking cricket. A years later in England, India were struggling to avoid defeat on the final day at 127 for five, and this 17 years boy batted for four hours with the tail to guide India to safety. It was his first Test century and my first ever experience of enjoying cricket thoroughly. A year later India went to Australia a force to recon with and I use to hear that Perth was its most lethal weapon. This small young man innings of 114 brought Craig McDermott and Merv Hughes to their knees. With wickets tumbling at the other end, this guy, still only 19, met the challenge head on. The Australian public have loved him ever since and he became my ego. Few years later India toured South Africa and South Africa with their stellar seam attack reduced India to 58 for five. The little young man wasted no time in taking the fight back to Donald and team. He hit 26 boundaries in his century, almost all of them absolute crackers. I prayed for his success, he gave me reason to smile. Lot was been said about Shane Warne, the greatest of all and blah blah, I hated it. I wanted my man to give him the taste of what we are when they tour India. The big

Judgement day - Retirement day
by bomber on Feb 08, 2012 09:32 AM  | Hide replies

India (whole of India not just cricket lovers) would prosper the day this guy retires. He is great but he doesn't deserve all this hype, frankly I am sick of it. He had many many chances in his life time to prove he is a legend as people term him but only thing people remember is his sharjah innings. Anyway it is ridiculously funny how rigged the media and commentators are, dare not ONE single guy says anything against him because they know they will be treated as outcasts after that. PITY

Greatest or not, if he had retired after WC and India lost consecutive series critics would have blamed him that he retired when India was in need of him.
It is not possible to please everyone.

I am a fan of SRT but it's difficult to digest that he's back into top 10 ranking in the TEST.. He had a poor run in England and poorer one in Aus.. How can he be in top 10 ? something is flawed in the system..

about 100th ton, SRT wudnt hv missed 20-25 innings i.e ODI series in Eng. (5 innings)ODI n test series in WI (11 innings), ODI vs WI in India (5 innings), ODI vs Eng (5 innings).

IF SRT's aim ws 100 he wud hv nt skipped all these matches n hd played. He ws second highest scorer in eng n aus frm Indian team.

Getting century is in tests difficult and graceful. And this is what cricket experts and fans expect him to achieve. And he too feels that. That is why he skipped them. You can notice he skipped only ODIs.

@ Anthony Raj

Tour of WI anyone? But he missed the England ODI series because of injury. Though he seems to be easing out of ODIs. I hope he retires from ODIs after Australia.

sonu, it was due to the test results (whitewash) and public pressure that people and selectors got rattled and wrongly selected dravid for odis... it was mistake and dravid did not do well at all...he was included because of failure of other seniors which was one of the important reason of our loss...if we have suffered so many test losses abroad it is because of failure of mainly seniors NOT juniors...it is juniors who are doing better than seniors for the last 5-6 years...since they started to get chances to play and improve and consolidate their position...and they have proved it amply by winning T20 WC odi WC and taking india to no. 1 and maintaining the position for 2 years....

sonu these seniors have been playing for so long but only after new generation players came into the side that we became no. 1 in ALL formats of the game...

even in wi against wi we won thanks to the fact that sachin did not play and raina played and hit 3 50s in the test series...if sachin had played we might even have lost the test series...

so stop trying to make excuses for the seniors, particularly sachin, and gather the courage to accept the truth and appreciate the new generation players...

and i would also like to add, (what i have said many times before also) this is all because of greg chappell who came at just the right time for indian cricket...and if we became no. 1 in all formats it is thanks to greg chappell as much as it is thanks to gary kirsten...
