Before the start of the Ganguly ERA the problem with leadership and captaincy was solely transformed from a time of total chaos since India did not win a single overseas Tests in 20 years.
But with the arrival of Sehwag, Zaheer and Harbhajan, and adding Laxman to the Fab Four there was a certain transformation. Ganguly had also rounded up Nehra to support Srinath and the teams seems to make a formidable transformation.
Had Ganguly managed to get Gambhir, Dhoni and Mishra in the eleven a few years earlier this era was quite formidable. With the retirement of Srinath, and injuries to Nehra and Zaheer, Ganguly was left with just Irfan Pathan as the only strike bowler in the team.
With a few years of solid leadership, Ganguly had tranformed a rag-tag unit into a formidable. In comes Mr Greg Chappell and when Ganguly hit poor form the team faces a crisis where Chappell decides to restructure. Nobody estimated the on going crisis that was to follow.
The common theme has been, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and now Gambhir on the receiving end of the politics. The cycle of re-building continues, till India to wins the T20 WC.
After that, the rebuilding starts until there is conflict of interest between Srikkanth's IPL franchise, Dhoni and Raini embroiled with yet another crisis where Harbhajan is dropped for Ashwin.
I think, after Srikkanth's tenure as a selector the BCCI needs to act and restoration with Gambhir at the helm since Dhoni may have hard time in recovering from this.
For starters avoid making some simple errors like:
- Virat batted so well in the ODI but square cuts the ball in the air to Ricky Ponting of all people. Hit it above him like Viru, or please play along the ground to Ricky
- Dhoni calls for an impossible 3rd run to Ashwin in same match . He didn't seem to know that Ashwin is a slow mover after knowing him so well in the IPL ! Both MSD and Ashwin could have made a partnership of it , if only to give a fight.
- PLease don't get out to full tosses ! You know who's thrice guilty !
- After 4 Tests and an ODI don't tell us someone has not adjusted to Australian conditions.Ask the coach what he's been doing.
-When you aren't so beefy as the Aussies pl don't try and hit for six on their huge grounds. Maybe MSD can, but what about our other weaker guys ? They've been caught on the ropes umpteen times.
- If your bowling coach isn't measuring up, abandon him and informally consult other experts who are buzzing around out there-Akram, Shane Warne, Richie benaud , all well wishers who don't want to watch a one sided series.
