Great memories

When Tony Grieg came to India in 1972-73 television was only available in Bombay and Delhi. There was no national broadcast. We used to follow the test matches through radio commentary and newspapers. Yet, Tony Grieg, as much as for his immense height as for his gutsy batting, became a great favourite with us all. He came again in 1976-77, and his popularity had not dimmed one whit. Rest in Peace ... genial giant.

In 1976 when he came as captain, he was most unsporting bowling off spinners and intimidating batsmen by appealing on every bowl though the bowl was hit for a score. His tactics were so slow that England never even made 200 runs in a day i any test.A negative captain. But a very fine commentator after Richie Benaud on channel nine.I remember when on that tour he played a zonal match in Jamshedpur and met the tallest man of that city who said after seeing Tony's shoes that are these shoes or an attachee case.
