When the Team DHONI loses series & one day Internationas in white wash manner why Dhoni has never written about his failure asCaptain/Batsmen/keeper by MEDIA ? Why he was not SACKED till now as the SHAMELESS fellow is still continuing as captain ? Does the Media/Writers were also bribbed not to write about him ?
this hometrack-bully clarke scored 1494 runs in 10 tests 17 innings with 4 100s and 2 50s in 1 year before the current test -1306 runs at 162.5 in 7 tests 11 innings with 4 100s all in australia soil----
while the 3 tests he played away he scored 3 tests 6 innings 188 runs average a little of 31 runs with 1 50 plus score in west indies!
this home track bully has average of about 65 runs at home and 40 runs away!!
as a captain too he LOST HOME series to sa...in first two tests this GREAT COOL captain let go off opportunities to win the tests and in the 3rd test he led aus to test and series defeat at home!

YOU STUDIPS FORCED HIM TO RETIRE. AT LAST AS YOU FELLOWS WISHED, HE REITRED. WHY ARE YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN TALKING ABOUT THIS LEGEND. THINK SOMETHING ELSE OF SHUT UR MOUTH.
1.Graem Smith (Inevitabley as he is nearing a century on captaincy) 2.Michael Atherton (How can forget 185 no vs SA) 3.Mark Taylor (an unbelivable declaration on the score of 334) 4.Graham Gooch (456 runs in a test a world record) 5.Brian Lara (His 2 unforgettable innings were as captain:400 and 153 both notouts) 6.Imran Khan (Primarily a bowler his batting improved a lot after captaincy 7.Ganguly (Mainly in ODIs)

It is the matter of winning not losing .
That shouldn't have been to identify the best batsmen. There should be a sense of perspective too. Cook, Trott both failed against SA and Pakistan this year. Look at their averages for example. No doubt Cook had a very good year, but it doesn't compares well against the exploits of Chanders, Kallis and Samuels. I would put these 3 names ahead of the 3 English batsmen in this list.
I think Clarke deserves his top spot. Though Cook comes second with 1200 runs, I think Hashim Amla should be ranked second, both in terms of average and the less number of tests played. That said, I could see one thing that is common among all these players, probably with an exception of KP - their exceptional temperament and committment on the pitch. They would never throw their wicket away. Even in cases where they got out cheaply, it was a superb delivery from the bowler or an exceptional piece of fielding from the fielder. If we consider the Indian players, I can think of only Dravid who can match the temperament and skill of these players.
