Not the right time

Strauss could have hold on for another few months given his moderate form and good captaincy. This is a collateral damage caused by KP row. When you don't feel comfortable in the office no matter what you are assigned to, it's better to quit. KP is not feeling sad, certainly.

Why should Sachin learn lesson from Andrew? Strauss retired at the age of 35 when he felt so. Similarly let Sachin decide on his retirement. Don't feel jealous.

Strauss

When Andrew Strauss took over his captaincy, England was in miserable condition. He led his team quite skillfully to extract optimum performance from each of his players. Beating Australia in Australia is by no means an easy job. But Strauss did commendable job making England No.1 ranked team in test cricket.

Though his career now ended with 0-2 test series defeat vs South Africa. Strauss did right thing by announcing retirement before English media can go all over him.

and thus he dents the revenge series

I think this is an exceptionally mistimed retirement, with KP gone the Eng team needed some stability in the top order coming to India. Shame the contest wont be as enticing. its gonna be a whitewash, but wont taste as sweet

Its amazing to eee how quietly these guys from Eng, Aus and SA retire after their contribution and look at us. A major controversy breaks out whenever someone retires and there is so much noise being created by everyone.Laxman and particularly Gangulys retirement was made such a huge controversy be everyone including the players themselves.

All Indian players you have listed did not retire with grace.

Ganguly - Forced retirement due to India's pathetic performance in 2007 WC and his thin scoring during his last many test matches.

Rahul & Laxman - Both were forcefully pressurized by Indian media after their dismal show on England & Australia tour. Dravid was clean bowled as many as 7 times in his 8 innings of Australian tour with poor scoring. He initiated before Laxman for announcing retirement. Srikanth & Dhoni pressured Laxman for retirement after Hyderabad test vs NZ. Laxman keeping his self-respect in mind, smartly announced retirement just before the Test series began.

Kumble - Kumble's performance faded during his last few test matches. He was master in taking wickets on under-prepared turning Indian tracks. But when he realized his performance was ageing, he was partially forced for his retirement.

For correct definition of graceful retirement you have to look at only two players of India namely Sunil Gavaskar & Javagal Srinath. All others were sacked & forcefully announced retirement.

Ganguly, after his comeback was the highest ODI run scorer and good test run scorer too...scored 100 in his last match!

Yes Javagal Srinath went when he was on top and people said WHY? when he retired. Most others ...people were fed-up and were kept in based on past reputations only. Ganguly was the most over=rated batsman in Indian history although he was a pioneering captain for India..the man who changed India from a sissy outfit to a gutsy in your face demons

story editor, what are you talking about? ganguly did not score a 100 in his last match...neither in odi nor in test...in his last odi inning he made 5 runs and in his last test inning he made 0 runs...

were you by any chance thinking about azharuddin? because he was the one who made a century against SA in the last test innings that he played before getting banned...

Every player has to say bye to the sport one day.
It is better leave on his own terms than on others.
