Indian Bowling
by SUBROTO RAY on Aug 23, 2012 10:15 PM  | Hide replies

The Indian bowling needs to be far more menacing for it to make any mark in international test cricket. Today excepting Zaheer we do not have a bowler who can make an impression particularly in foreign pitches. South Africa has won against England because of their fiery pace attack backed up by some superlative batting from Hashim Amla. We don't see bowlers like Dale Steyn or Morni Morkel to defend our totals. We have some youngsters like Umesh Yadav , Varun Aron and ishant Sharma who can strike at over 140 km/h. But they need to go a long way in improving their skill in fast bowling. A definite plan to put them under some good professional coaching need to be considered seriously. This has been India's perennial problem and is much talked about especially when there is a debacle like what happened in England and Australia. Unless we have a definite action plan to work upon this weakness we should not even dream of being no 1 or no 2 consistently in test cricket.

zaheer will no more be effective as he is fast reaching the shelf life as a pace bowler...

anyways when has india ever produced good pace bowlers....

i guess kumble had good pace, he was the ideal person to be our leading fast bowler....

Agree with you. But it goes with the pitches in India.

Unless we have the pitches that bounce and encourage a fast bowler it is not going to help. Even Steyn and Mokel will be disheartened if they have to bowl for months on Indian pitches.

Sachin Tendulkar and his flaws
by Varadarajan Ravindran on Aug 23, 2012 10:08 PM  | Hide replies

Sachin Tendulkar does not have the solid defense of Gavaskar or Dravid, as he is an attacking batsman. The technical flaws show up now and then; and one may very well note that he does not have a century in each innings of a Test match, leave alone an double hundred and a hundred in the same match. It is not a great compliment that Bradman thought that Tedulkar's batting style resembled his. Sir Donald Bradman would not have been able to make the big scores against a four-pronged pace attack of the mighty West Indies. It is no wonder that Tendulkar's technique is suspect against a pace attack consisting of four bowlers bowling at or over 90 mile per hour. Tendulkar often cashed against weak attacks like Bradman, and could not deliver under pressure against high-quality bowling. In my opinion, he is not a Sobers, Kanhai, or Barrington or Simpson against top-class attacks.

Sobers and Kanhai were class batsmen. Won't put Barrington and Simpson in the same league. Both Kanhai and Sobers were classical stroke players and never used to open the innings. I agree with you that Gavaskar and Dravid have impeccable defense but Sachin is a better and more fluent stroke maker which is needed at no 4 position. He is perfect in technique against pace and spin alike. Only thing I can say about Sachin in the negative is that his shot selections in test cricket now a days are not always perfect and I would blame the one dayers and t 20 cricket for that.

The only cricketer I would rank after Sachin in stroke making amongst Indian cricketers is Vijay Manjrekar of yesterday years.

Cool Indian:test cricket is real cricket. All this t20 and IPL is gambling/casino and no different. Appreciate test cricket and 50-50 cricket and be a grownup. Plan your work and dont blame cricket for nation's productivity! Also, understnad and learn how to watch a test cricket. There are sessions which u can watch and skip if not interested.
