Manoj tiwary is the new addition to the middle order although he is yet to learn to prize his wicket. Raina continues to be the odd utility player and occasional ‘finisher’ . Rohit as always continues to be the puzzle wrapped in IPL mystery. In bowling, spin is virtually reduced to solo performance of Ashwin backed by all part timers. How is this going to sustain TESTs ? No one knows. Pace ? Zaheer is on his last legs for sure with his ugly tummy jutting out. Time for BCCI to start his retirement planning. Irfan of course is something to cheer for now but his acid test lies ahead in the rest of the home season . The sudden consistency of his batting is a real pleasant surprise . However going by his past it might be too early to celebrate and so better keep our fingers crossed because on the bowling front he is yet to get that consistency in swing, line, length, accuracy etc. More interesting will be to see if Dhinda progresses further with his speed and ‘bouncers’ to graduates into a different class of fast bowlers of past era ! For that he would need to help himself get more opportunity by some tight bowling not giving away easy runs. Other youngsters of course are yet to hit the threshold or the breaking out point..
BCCI must be having a sigh of relief at the series win after that disasterous Eng and Aus tour.SL made things easier fielding depleted side with their star players suffering injuries . As it is post Murali, SL bowling lacks bite except for Malinga whose performance fluctuates between two extremes. Add to that their depleted batting, not much is to be read in India's series win although it still a good filler of morale booster to move ahead. More than anything it has brought some good reprieve for a harried Dhoni both as a captain and as a batsman giving him some breathing time to get back his old stature. The series has definitely helped him get some of his old ‘rocking’ batting form. So, for Dhoni &co. as a team the forthcoming home series is going to be the real Test and opportunity to set themselves up on an upward path. As far as SL is concerned there is nothing much to be optismistic about with bowling attack of one man army. It remains to be seen how young Pradeep shapes up in future. Coming back to Indian batting, not surprisingly while Kohli is steadily growing ‘Virat’ but Gambhir has been the biggest ‘turn –around’ story the way he has started getting complete control of his innings as never before. It is very big plus for team India ‘opening’ although Sehwag is still to become “khaas’ and get the ‘Vishwas’.
Lahiru Thirimanne, who came to bat at number three after the fall of opener Tillakaratne Dilshan [ Images ] (0), was the top scorer for the hosts with his fighting 81-run knock.
