FDI in retail should be allowed
by vathula on Nov 28, 2011 11:24 AM

If the foreign firms can agree to quota for Rural and Dalits and most backward, then they canm bring in 100%. It is better to have quota directly benefiting public than reserving a quota for so called ‘Indian Partners’.

One thing is Really good ...
by RSS on Nov 28, 2011 11:12 AM  | Hide replies

All Matches in this 5 ODI series are Day-Night encounters, Plus Sachin is not playing - So critics cannot balme him for poor performance or for India's failure.

FDI so dangerous
by mahesh mandowara on Nov 28, 2011 10:17 AM  | Hide replies

Today Sharad Pawar argued that by bringing FDI in retail they are helping the farmers but simple economics does not buy his stand.

Say Today there are 100 Wholesalers (Buyers) and 100 farmers (Seller) add to this 8 foreign retailers hence there are 100 sellers and 108 buyers. Now say a product is sold at Rs.10 now this 8 buyers shall offer Rs.15 and hence this 100 sellers would obviously like to sell their product @ Rs.15 where our wholesaler although capable of purchasing @15 but compel not to do as they shall sell the product @Rs 17 to retailer who in turn shall sell the product to end consumer @ 19 whereas the big retailer shall sell the product directly to end consumer @ Rs.17 and hence both the farmer and end consumer are benefitted This is short term. Now say after 10 years this wholesaler shall die out and now in market economy there are 100 sellers (farmers) and 8 buyers (forign FDI now they shall start the bargain and ask farmers to sell @ Rs.8 and sell their product @ Rs.17 or Rs.19 the price they like (Monopolistic situation in both the market) Hence in long term it is suicidal for both the farmers , Indian retailers and end consumers and remember Chinese product are still at our doorstep awaiting entry thru the Wal-Mart and like.

Please don’t allow FDI in retail.Vote out Congress from UP in near election and from centre in next loksabha election

Please forward this message if you agree with this logic.

Mahesh, good message but it will be lost. I was rerading recently Stuffed or Starved by Raj Patel. He gives these kind of examples but it will be no use. It does not matter who is in power. They all love their money. Be it is India or elsewhere. The big corporations know this and they exploit the greed of a few people and destroy the lives of a lot more. Any way good attempt from your side. I wish you all the luck.

Dear Mahesh, good observation. But on the contrary we can have a different situation. You have forgotten another person in between i.e the retailer between wholesale dealer & consumer

I have been in a such an industry where sales are thru manufacturer-> Wholesale dealer -> Retailer -> consumer.

Prior to 1995, the wholesale dealers were having margin of 50~60% and the retailers were not in position to negotitate with the prices. But after '95 some manufacturers started directly selling to retailers. Now we the pressure was on wholesale dealer to reduce his margin to keep up his market.

After 15 yrs, we have a different market scenario now. The manufacturers have started selling directly to retailers and the consumers are benefitted by this move. Now there is nowhere exhorbitant margin like before.

On the other hand, wholesale dealers have not died. They have expaned their business t include other areas and have directly started selling to consumers (have become big retailers).

So it has now become a win-win situation. Nowhere people have shut shops. They are just expanding and trunover has increased. More than everything, because of new manufacturers we have got new products which was not available in market pre '95.

I think allwoing FDI will only be beneficial.

It is heartening to see that the crowds are back. With the pulsating Test match in Bombay, we can hope that people will return to watch Test Matches after the dismal attendance in the first two Tests.
