With Dhoni not opting to use Yuvraj as the 3rd spinner because of the intense pressure created by the Indian batting failure and poor spell from the opening bowlers it appears that the selectors missed out on introducing Rohit Sharma, for the lower middle order spot.
The major contenders for this position were based on FC averages of middle order Test or FC cricket. The order is important since Kohli is not at the top of the pecking order as a Test middle order. Names like heavy weights Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwari and Pujara are more likely candidates since they have done better in the longer format mainly FC domestics.
Let us look at the FC averages and not the List-A averages
Rohit Sharma : 65 innings at 62.87 Manoj Tiwari : 73 innings at 56.76 C Pujara : 89 innings at 55.81
The presence of Kohli, Yuvraj and Raina for this spot was not appropriate. Test matches require long periods of concentration, patience and application to play pace and spin for over long periods of time.
Hopefully, Rohit is brought in with an average of 62.87 just like Rahane's 69.11 where chances of failure are less.
