Ponting
by Devdutt Nayak on Mar 30, 2011 02:18 PM

Play Hard should not get in the way of Play Fair.

Ponting has been supported by a superb support structure - the board, various senior players, the coaches and at least 3 top umpires.

When you have umpires on your side, there is not much that can be done to you.

When you have an overabundance of top talent, plus umpires, you are going to win, no matter what.

And if you get cranky and cheat in such a position, it does not show your strength it shows your weaknesses.

Strong captains would be Allan Border, Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh and kiwi Stephen Fleming.

They fought out of tough situations without a star-studded team like Ponting had.

Ponting got paid for Taylor's and Steve Waugh's hard work.

Without Warne, McGrath, Gilly and Hayden, Ponting had a tough time with even strong players.

Then you get to Greg Chappell.
Now Ganguly surely knows what Chappell did.

He says that Chappell broke the unity of the team.

Bhajji says it. Many others say it.

For the Aussies to undertake a rigging of the strongest contender team shows weakness not strength.

Ponting should have opposed that tooth and nail.

Bob Woolmer was murdered and Pakistan left in disgrace in 2007.
Today Pak stopped the Aussie WC march.

See?

Ponting is more lucky than great.

You can shout as much as you want, but to study it well, you must see the outliers also, the observations that dont fit your beliefs.
