What a bowler? Long run ups and bowling along with Waqar n Wasim, changed the art of bowling which was dying coz of sub continent wickets.
Match against SA whr he got 3 wickets in an over and got the loosing match under their kitty and that rockin deliveries to Dravid n Sachin and 1999 World Cup. He is a star.

Fastest bowler of all times??/
by GARY on Mar 22, 2011 07:26 AM  | Hide replies

It amuses me to hear that this young kid who has no knowledge of the past cricket history tell that Shoaib Akhtar is the fastest bowler in the history of the game. That is a joke, there were so many earlier and what is more they were with pure clean actions that was a delight to behold. Names roll in......Ray Lindwall, Frank Tyson, Wes Hall, Fred Trueman, Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Andy Roberts, Micheal Holding, Malcolm Marshall, etc...they were all so fast and so exciting to watch and most importantly bowled with clean actions and clean in their careers as well, no hint of drugs taking or ball tampering and all that....Azhar is still a kid who has not discarded his kiddie underwear..he needs to be taught the history of the game properly.

The fastest ball bowled in the history of the game IS by Shoaib. He hit 161.3 Kmph (100.2 Mph) in Pakistan v/s England match in 2003. Nick Knight faced the delivery. Get your facts right, man. God Bless.

He declared his retirement just to be in the playing eleven of the knockout stage;
And the subcontinent players are well known for come back after retirement; e.g. Imran Khan, Miandad,Gavaskar, Srikant

Yes, Sunny was a true legend and one who played the fastest bowlers the world has ever known easily all without helmets and much of today's protective gear. To compare Shoaib to him is laugahble

you are right.
Cricketers from england or Australia never come back from retirement. They do not come back even to play IPL.

This would be a tremendous loss for World Cricket
by Aiyer Raju on Mar 21, 2011 08:59 PM

Lawrence Rowe, Vinod Kambli, Shoaib Akhtar -- are names connected misfortune in that they could never give Cricket the full potential of what they are capable of.

It is a signt for a connoisieur seeing Shoaib running in to bowl. The fear caused in the minds and hearts of facing batsmen is palpable. They are much relieved to see the ball pitched outside the off or leg stumps and whizz past their ear for the wicketkeeper to collect. The thud with which the ball lands in the gloves of the keeper would tell you the pace with which the ball travelled.

The two consecutive balls with which he bowled out Sachin and Dravid in one of those matches is unforgettable moments of fearsome fast bowling at its best. It is so sad that he could not remain fit for continuous periods making him miss many an important tournaments for his country. The records which should have been his for the asking somehow eluded him.

While it is natural for players from his opponent teams to wish that he is not in the playing eleven, the tragedy was compounded by his own countrymen, cricketers who simply were jealous of the attention and admiration which he was receiving.

Fast bowling is very serious business, and it is very natural for a bowler of his calibre to have an attitude. You can't grudge that.

Apart from saying it is tragic to world cricket to see his retirement so soon than it should have happened in due course of time, what can one say!

No Good
by a r on Mar 21, 2011 06:31 PM

Shoaib is no good to play at International level. He lacks fitness, stamina to play full day cricket. He has forcfully inducted into the team to play little cameos/very short spells. Good that he has taken the right decision to quit.
