If only one-tenth of the money spent on cricket—by the organisers, the advertisers and the fans—was spent on a meaningful and intellectual sport like chess instead, Indian sport would have reaped a rich harvest by now. Viswanathan Anand would at least have had some company in the world chess arena.

Good feedback, guys. Okay, not just chess then. Why not give equal or near-equal importance to other sports where India has excelled in recent years, like badminton, wrestling, boxing and archery, and bring them into the national mainstream? There's tremendous talent, skill and potential there, as we have seen in the last Asiad and the Olympics.

Honestly, chess is a very personal sport, it doesn't evoke emotions a la football or hockey or cricket. It is about an individual playing for himself pitting himself against others. A team sport always gets people enthused because you never know who is going to click today, you follow a team for form, a player for form and a lot more goes into the composition of the team and the venues et al.
Don't think chess can generate the sort of advertisements even as the take up will be very less among the people.
it needs to be worked up from the ground up. if kids are willing to spend free time playign chess, through some initiatives, and there is a huge huge market, it might work. Think of the effort involved. No one today is willing to invest for the long run, all want money fast. What do you think is the obvious sport to invest in?
Pakistan will keep an enquriy and say this guy has taken money and ban him for 5 yrs, then when the next tournement comes they will say his ban has been lifted and he is back in the team, this is a day to day affair in pakistan cricket, just coz ICC stepped in and banned those 3 palyers they r not able to make into the team otherwise all pak players are free to take drugs, bet, do what ever they feel as they know when it comes to tests and main tournaments they will get back into the team as their circket board is the most corrupt
pak may 2nd or 3rd position now in group A. India is like to take 2 or 3rd position in group B. so ind vs pak shall be in QF. and its going to be end of pak.

Please improve your english language and then after come to rediff. Sorry for the comments but thats right
Pakistan, after winning all the previous matches, were bookies favourite. So it could be some betting mafia who would have bet on NZ to win and then used their 'good relations' with the players/mgmt to make sure they get all the money. And going by what Kamran Akmal is famous for, this could have been another shot at the money by him. Even the way Afridi got out to a straight ball, no speed, short-of-length - adds more suspicion.
