Solving the issue
by Crick fan on Mar 11, 2011 07:13 AM

Yes this can be defintly addressed if not solved. They way Indians have bowled have been toothless no bite in the attack. Except Zaheer no other bowler looks penetrative. The rest of the pack can atleast make effort to bowl in right area's, and if they do that the results will be hugly different.
Week link in our bowling are Yusuf and Piyush. Both of them look to Gally kids bowling much enthuciastically, but get hammered.
Its reliving to see Yuvraj putting some energy in to bowling. Same with Nehra he is a safe bowler, but not one who will get hand ful wickets in a burst. Harbajan is gone too defensive. As a result our main aim when bowling is to restrict the opposition and not get them all out. As you cannot produce Lilly's and Holding in one day. Good thing that Indians never had them. So Indians will have to live with the current situation. The caoch and captain can get the bowlers to bowl tightly and support out batsman to win matches.

Yes, India has found a bowling combination!
by Nikhil Shah on Mar 10, 2011 02:33 AM  | Hide replies

The main worry playing the WC in the sub-continent was chasing a total of 300 which is a certain defeat. The emergence of Yuvraj as a specialist spinner who in the last 2 years has been bowling at an ECO rate of 4.78 makes this a viable bowling attack.

India can go with the spin trio of Chawla, Harbhajan and Yuvraj and prevent the possibility of chasing 300 . The conditions in the sub-continent are not helpful for 3 seamers and most likely Nehra will be a backup.

The combination is:

Zaheer, Munaf, Harbhajan, Chawla and Yuvraj!

Most of us will argue that Chawla is young and
inexperienced, but his googly in the
sub-continent could be lethal against SA in particular. The presence of Ashwin, along with off-spinners like Yusuf, Harbhajan and Sehwag loses its variety and effectiveness.

Is Chawla Relative? He is culprit for tie with England. Next 2 matches also he did not bowled well. He must be having big Jack behind him.

For any bowling attack to be effective, it need variety. Five of the best bowlers in the country could be a seam bowler. But then do you pick 5 seamers for the attack? No?

Because variety unsettles a batsmen and it is an important but an under-rated aspects of selecting a proper bowling attack.

Ashwin is a better spinner than Chawla, agreed, the problem is we are going with 4 off-spinners in the lineup.

There is still SA and WI matches and if India wins the group seedings it will play Pakistan in the quarters. If any of the strong teams can rack up 300, chasing would be difficult for even a strong batting line like India.

Biased selection
by anis on Mar 09, 2011 04:22 PM

Captain Dhoni is biased. Sreesanth got hit in one match and is permanently rested but Piyush Chawla got thrashed in all three matches but continues to hold his place in side. R Ashwin from Tamil Nadu, also from the South is also being sidelined despite being a superior bowler than Piyush Chawla. Even Sunil Gavaskar and Dean Jones have called for Chawla's omission.
This type of bias of the captain will be exposed against stronger teams in the quarterfinals.
Team should be chosen on merit and not on partisan and regional basis as it was done in the 80s. India's 1983 World Cup final victory was out of sheer luck on the day as the team was exposed in the subsequent Test and one-day series against the Windies, which whitewashed India.
If only a team is selected on merit can India win the 2011 World Cup. Dhoni should follow strategies offered by cricket experts.

Mad Show-Rightly Pointed Out !!!
by Wepoorindians on Mar 09, 2011 03:46 PM

Ony Mad goes to watch cricket. Rediff staffers, Manu Shankar and Abhishek Mande , are the two selected ones. They are mad themselves and fooling others as well.
Why to waste time, energy and money in game which has no takers left.
Many even do not know about the schedule about World cup.
Go to any Airport, wall hand LCDs beg before everyone just for a glance on them.
Now only scavangers, lower middle class people talk about Cricket and a few college or school goer discuss Cricket.
We fail to understand who has told to SHARUKH KHAN that "Whats The Score" is the most asked questions these days. Hardly people take interest in Cricket thanks to its lowering credibility.
