A Rajendran
DRS implementation is faulty
by A Rajendran on Jul 07, 2011 10:30 PM

Cricket is a weird game. In the recent world cup, this so called DRS was used and there were a few bad calls even there. Particularly strange is the rule that the umpire's decision stands even if he is wrong if the ball was pitched at a particular distance from the batsman. Why have DRS then?

As for Harper, the Indians could have been a bit more magnanimous. As it is, with all these tantrums, they could soon become the most unloved team in the world, the way the Aussies were at their peak.

Criticism of Harper unfair and unjust: Lorgat

If the Umpiring is so difficult that Harper cannot manage, he should stay home. It hurts the team that is affected and not the stupid official, like Lorgat, who seems to be politicking as the affected team is an Indian Team.

Indian team has rightly pointed out the wrong decisions of Daryl. Instead of looking in to the wrong decisions of Daryl against India, ICC is blaming Indian team who suffered the wong decisions of Mr.Daryl in many occasions. Is it sportsmanship.

Indian Team's experience with Daryl Harper has never been a happy one. Who can forget his LBW
decision against Sachin when the Ball from Glen Mcgrath hit his Helmet and was clearly going over the stumps.Daryl Harper, Steve Bucknor,Clive Lloyd, Mike Dennes have palyed partisan when Indian Teams were involved.ICC was never tired of repeating the above blokes just to irritate BCCI>

Include chris broad who should be first in the list of match refrees who were inimical towards india. His son abuses the umpire and gets away with 50% fine while Dhoni is fined 60% for slow overrate. Imagine an indian abusing an aussie umpire and the whole world would break loose!!!

Don't regrett but act

There is no point in showing sympathy for a good cause unless you have the courage to act against wrong doers.I doubt if ICC has the guts to act against open criticism by captain arrogant of umpire?

Dhoni was right in voicing his opinion. At the end of the day, as an umpire, Harper had a very poor test match. That's the fact. The way things are in any game, the umpires mistakes can haunt the player's performance. So it's natural that Harper was criticised by Dhoni.

Right or wrong, there was a nice option of using the DRS, but for some weird reason, India is not ready for that. Call it phobia, call it suppression. However, I do agree that there has to be a standard for DRS implementation. Cameras, hawk-eye, hot-spot, the works.

I think that's what the BCCI is saying. They are saying that without the whole works, the DRS system is incomplete. If you don't have hot spot and only hawk eye or the other way round, then the DRS is incomplete. Without the hotspot you can't know for sure about the edges and without hawkeye you can't be sure about the LBWs. If both aren't present then you end up playing the guessing game which means you are back to square one. But as things stand, the DRS system doesn't use the whole works. If it does and if BCCI still objects to it's use then that would be weird.

As much as I see the end stance, I still believe that India shud at least make a start. Even technology cannot replicate 100%. I have been following the DRS stuff since implementation and am quite impressed (minus the-works as well)

I like DRS too. I just hope that with BCCI taking a stand that it will only accept DRS wih the full works included and not half baked, it will result in faster inclusion of Hotspot, hawkeye and other technologies in the DRS. I'm sure you know this that BCCI has agreed to use DRS system with hotspot for caught behind and lbw decisions (only to check if there was an edge) for the upcoming England series. That's sure going to be a cracker of a series.

As bhargav rightly pointed out, one can't use half baked technology. It needs to be good enough for one to use it, which the DRS isn't.
