A politician questioning auction?? at least it is public
by Prasanna Kulkarni on Jan 27, 2011 01:38 AM

At least the IPL auction is public and players are getting money unlike billion dollar deals done by politicians in the form of black money. I'm sure this politician needs a cut from franchises and players and so bringing legalities in the picture. Better politicians stop talking about legalities and just bother abt their black money business. India still has potential to prosper.

IPL is great for India
by super hero on Jan 26, 2011 06:13 AM  | Hide replies

When a cricket series happens, all the money goes to the host country.
So every cricket board is begging India to come play in their country.
They will reciprocate by playing more matches in India.
India bailed out New Zealand and Sri Lanka boards out of debt with just one tour.
So in essence the money is coming from India and is being split even bewteen India and
other countries. So BCCI, came up with IPL to solely capitalize on the cricket craze of billion ppl.
So if IPL grew and played for 6 months, all the Indian 'Cricket Money' stays in India.
This will surely affect the meaningless short ODI's series' and other cricket boards.
But we wont be at loss. In 2009 BCCI split the IPL income 25 cr each to 25 state boards.
It wouldhave been doubled for 2010 .Double it again if u add the income from other matches and Champions league.
Where do u think the money is going? For building infrastructre and to the players.

In short "If India Srilanka series happens" sri lankan board gets lot of money from "INDIAN" sponsers.
Why give the money to other countries? IPL helps to keep the money in India.

Is auctioning and purchase caps making BCCI more rich? Its for IPL and for good of players.
There wont be autioning after 5 years when IPL is very very big. Till then, they cant let Ambani and other rich franchises buy all the best players and those teams winning all the time. IPL will loose charm and it will die. So auctioning to give fair chance to all teams. In 5-10 years, there wont be auctions like in NBA or EPL.
Why purchase caps? - so youngsters wont be spoiled. Sourabh tiwary easrned coreres coz he represented India in few ODI's. Manish pandey will get 15 lakhs because he didnt. The message is clear, if u want to make crores try to make it to the cricket team first.
Y blame BCCI even for good intentions?
I am proud we have IPL.I am proud we are hiring foreigners.

The difference is that the player has choice to not accept the contract offered by the franchise which won the bid for him

So a job offer will be a crime?

The illegality will be attracted only if auctioning is specially prohibited. Just 'coz something is not expressly allowed, it does not become illegal.

Indian law does not permit the auction of human beings. But here a player and his skills are being auctioned, not a human.
Ones skill and services can be auctioned. It is a very transparent way to arrive at a appropriate valuation. The campus placements at IIM's is an example.
Yes auctions can happen in India.
The value attached to a player (his price) can be paid to him in any currency he desires as long as the transactions are as per Indian financial laws.
A player being sold or unsold is an indication of the way they are perceived by a set of decision makers. It is also a good reality check for some really inflated egos.
A nations cultural heritage can never be hurt by a free and fair way of trade. It is naive to think so.
The ministries could not answer these questions because there are some really incompetent people working there.

Guru Nair:

A player is a human being. He can decide whether or not he wants to be put up for auction.

Ricky Ponting didn't put himself up for auction. That was his choice. Gilchrist did. And someone bought his skills.
Lara did. No one bought his skills.

Same happens in the job market too... No?

Dude - what's wrong with you? Mr. Raj has clearly said in his message that the person is being hired by a franchise for a certain amount based on his skills - so where did the cultural heritage has come into the picture? A player is a human being - but the player is not sold, his 'skills' are being bought for a amount which is based on franchises estimation, which may be right or wrong. We change the company if another company wants to pay a bigger amount for my 'skills', which doesn't mean I am a slave for them - it means, I work for them to fulfill the requirements with my available 'skills'. Is it that hard to understand this simple logic?
@Raj Thackeray - very good response!!!
