till 1983
by veerapuram dharan on Jan 24, 2011 03:22 PM  | Hide replies

till 1983, the bcci was just a small bunch of jokers like how our present hockey or archery boards are run..once we won in 1983, we found lots of sponsors and all of a sudden, people realised to tap the business potential of teh game in our country..the irony is, we still talk of 1983 to this day as we dont have any great achievement to show..look at aus, they are 4 time world champions, yet, the media stil dont support them as they have lost to eng very badly..such is the benchmark they set

am not anti cricket but trying to highlight the need to have balacne in all sports...one young swimmer had won a bronze medal in the poresent asian games..now hes forgotten..if given proper sponsorship and infrastructure, he could bring olympic medals..

Incorrect information. Indians never PLAYED any game in FIFA world cup. They qualified once (guess how? there were not enough teams from our zone!!!) but were sent back when players refused to play with wearing shoes!

Cricket evolved because the moment we won world cup BCCI banked on it to raise funds and built good infrastructure on it.

On the other hands associations are big idi0ts and never try to bank on any achievements made by players, they try to rip profits for themselves instead.

What exactly has been his contribution?
by sandeep kumar on Jan 24, 2011 03:17 PM  | Hide replies

He is a nice guy no doubt, but i dont understand exactly what the praise has been for. Its as if he transformed team india. Looking at the facts:
1) The No1 ranking was mainly due to the fact that we have the worlds best line up, and one of the worlds best bowler in Zaheer. What coaching can you possibly give tendulkar, sehwag, laxman, harbhajan. They were superstars before kirsten arrived, and among the best.
2) The techniques of our young batsmen has been suspect throughout. As an opening bat who grew up on boucy sa pitches, one hoped this aspect will be looked into. As talent goes, our youngsters are the best, but the likes of rohit, raina, pathan, yuvraj etc needed guidance as far as technique is concerned. But the same old short ball/swing issues remain.
3) And the mark of any good coach is the bench strength, and we saw that in the absence of the big guns, the team struggled big time. Kirsten did nothing in this department.
I think a good Indian coach, could have got for 1/4th of what bcci paid kirsten, so hope the next assignment comes from home.

Dude, even Roger Federer needs a coach 365 days. He has been number 1 or 2 for so many years. The argument is settles. I Hope :)

coach is definitely needed.SL won world cup because of Strategy of their coach Dave Whatmore.
However with Gary we didn't saw any strategy for team like change of batting lineup, bowling etc.he just coached traditional way and our players are established ones.why can't Yuvraj,Raina come out of form if we have coach like Gary who is left hand batsman?

anyways he was no use.has not done any great as coach compared to Dave Whatmore for SL.
there was no strategy just traditional cricket.
being Left hand batsman he has failed to coach batsman likes of Raina,Yuvraj.we didn't got any good opening in SA itself what's was his use as coach then?

Agree to Sandeep. India has failed to produce batsmen who can match the Fab 4(Sachin,Saurav,Rahul & VVS).It was here that Kirsten could have made the difference. But from what we saw in oneday series in South Africa,Indian top order apart from Virat Kohli failed in every match.

And of course if his team wins he will be in cloud nine. Everyone will fall at his foot to get him as coach (or touch his foot). Good idea to get motivated performance from the team asking world cup as his departing gift.
