India too can win this way
by Prasad Damodaran on Feb 21, 2011 08:48 AM  | Hide replies

If you look at the players playing Cricket for Canada almost all of them are of Asian Origin. Why not India do the same, hire some foreign players from each part of the World and give them Indian Citizenship and money and they will one day bring the Football World Cup to India and then we can celebrate rejoice like anything.

India team needs to learn from SL team how to behave
by setu_madhavan@rediffmail.com on Feb 20, 2011 10:45 PM

We Indians need to learn from these teams how to behave. After crushing Canada, did Sri Lankans make cheap comments when they came to taek their awards, like, "Canada is not world class team. Canada is not fit to play Test".

But our players like Viru will needlessly make cheap comments to the press like, "I told you Bangladesh is not fit to play tests. I told you this was a reve_nge match. Bangladesh is not upto the mark."

Why? the world has seen that you scored 175 against BANGLADESH. Now keep your mou_th sh_ut. We Indians were going crazy after defeating Bangladesh by how much-87 runs? If Bangladesh is so weak how did we allow them to score about 300 runs?

The Indian team needs to be told to let their bat do the talking. We havent even played the stronger teams, and as usual we are going overboard after defeating Bangladesh.

Which cricket player openly names his own team mate to the media who did not play well. "Our bowlers did well except Sreeshant", said Viru when he went out to get his MOM award. Can you ever imagine any Australian, English, Pakistani, NZ, Sri lankan player make such ridiculous statements.

I had a lot of respect for Viru, and still admire his batting a lot. I now know why BCCI does not want him as a captain. This guy has absolutely no clue what to say. He has no control over his mouth. I no longer blame BCCI for not making him captain. I used to be angry at BCCI

funny cup
by Nagaraj on Feb 20, 2011 10:31 PM  | Hide replies

cricket world cup, i think is the funniest cup. Half the countries like Canada, Netherlands, Ireland etc., have just a bunch of NRI players. Nor there is any interest amongst their natives to the extent they may not even know what cricket is. As far as the rest, cricket is just a dying game whether it is England or West indies. Funniest part is qualifying for Football World Cup is something every country dreams of, while we need just a few NRIs who know a little bit of cricket for a country to qualify in Cricket World Cup LOL And we take pride in it. what a sorry state of affairs

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. ALL the team players in Canad team were Indians, Srilankans, Bengladeshis etc. and I could not find anyone from Canadian origin. Canadians are interested in Ice Hockey and other sports.

u may be an ardent fan of cricket. But be civilised when ur in forums. Restrict ur argument to the point, instead of calling people fools. USA and China may not be playing FIFA, since football is not a popular game there. And they have strive hard to get into FIFA world cup, whether they care or not, unlike Cricket World Cup where every tom, dick and harry is included just to show to the world that it is really world cup. This is what the point i was trying to make.

and dont you think even in fifa world cup every tom dick harry is included? commom i make my point again , everyone in the world knew that south kora , nigeria , south africa , honduras , chile , switzerland , nz , aus , greece were not going to win the world cup and were weak teams yet they were given qualification , they can shorten the soccer world cup to 10 teams and can still find the deserving winner , dont think all the 32 teams have any chance of winning the world cup.

@javier...dont make a fool of yourself....Cricket qualifiers are played by minnow countries who hardly follow cricket nor cricket is their bread n butter...
for exa: Bas Zuiderent from Holland is a doctor which is his main profession.. or say the team of Canada which is almost represented by exptriates from sub-continent ,Jamaica, Uganada....Out of the 14 teams in the WC , 7 seem to be strong teams...
On contrary, Football is played in almost all countries and is popular in more than 100 countries...THE MAIN POINT IS FOOTBALL QUALIFIERS ARE SO STRONG THAT YOU CAN TERM THEM AS MINI WORLD CUPS....remember that only 12 teams from Europe only qualify to the WC ...

"south kora , nigeria , south africa , honduras , chile , switzerland , nz , aus , greece"----these is due to the quotas allocated to each continent ...

"dont think all the 32 teams have any chance of winning the world cup."---yes, but do expect that every team will give a tough fight in each n every match unlike cricket in which results are almost predictable...

Unfortunately our great nation India cannot stand in a soccer competition against your so-called dick and harry teams like Chile and Switzerland. Switzerland actually beat world champion Spain and Chile played very stylish football. It made the soccer world cup entertaining to watch where they showcased their skill and hard work. They lost out to more skillfull teams yes - but in tight contests. Whereas in the recent Asia cup the Indian team got through the backdoor and reconfirmed the fact that we are incapable of competing against a nation as small as Bahrain. Look - cricket is a game that most nations don't play at all and so we get in, therefore be in no illusion about the level of competition between cricket and some other sport like soccer or tennis. In contrast these poor teams like Canada don't have any interest in cricket - it is clear that only expatriate Indians there are playing the game. So Nagraj is right. This world cup fall short of out expectation of a real competition between nations who are passionate about their game. We lack genuine sporting success in this country.

People like Javier are a prime reason for the death of sport in certain countries. They call others fools when in all actuality they are the foolish ones. Who said USA and China don't care about FIFA qualification? I live in Canada and closely follow the MLS or Major League Soccer and the soccer world cup is a BIG thing here in Canada and USA. I have many Chinese friends who also tell me they see China winning the world cup some day. These are the dreams of people you are talking about Javier so don't play coy with that. Besides, what has India done as a sporting nation ? a few dozen medals over 60 years since independence is NOT a big deal. If you take out cricket from the equation India is a pathetic framework of politics, regional bias and superstition. No presence in soccer, losers in hockey, non-presence in Olympics except one or two players etc is a pathetic record. USA and China have presence in all major sporting events of the globe. Cricket is a game played by slaves of Britain and I care less about it. Indians should at least focus on their national game which is hockey. It's a shame what is happening to hockey in India. So address that before you go on insulting people and talking cheap about their accomplishments - you fool !
