I hope Yusuf will get a chance in playing eleven. Then who will be out ? Exprience may go in Yuvi’s favour. Kohli is also in good form. Then so called talented Raina will be out ??? I think remaining batsmen all will be there if they are fit to play.

just two innings and everybody's going ga-ga over this pathan.....played almost 70/80 matches and performed in just two matches. I guess the player to watch is kohli and not pathan also gambhir can be dangerous. Above all tendulkar is there.

Experts or past players have been making all sorts of predictions about the favourite team to win WC 2011, important players to watch out for etc.

I do agree that there are certainly some impact players for various teams like Kieron Pollard, Shane Watson, Yusuf Pathan, Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Kevin Pieterson etc.

But as a common man who is also an avid cricket fan, I would be extremely happy to see team work leading teams to victories instead of stray performances from one or two players here and there.

If a team makes close to or more than 300 runs in 50 overs with atleast 4 batsmen making fifties, I would rate it a much more desirable situation than a team making 200 plus on the back of a big hundred by one batsman.

In much the same fashion, I would rather like 4 or 5 bowlers chipping in with one or two wickets each to restrict or bowl out the opposition, rather than one bowler claiming 4 or 6 wickets but his team ending up losing!

Hail team performance, cricket is a team game.

then cricket will be come boring..this uncertainity of soemone suddenly playing a great innings makes this game so interesting , even a team game individual can almost singlehandedly win a match here..that makes it different from Football or hockey ..where individual brilliance can win a moment but not a match.

To win or not to win
by Harish Pandit on Feb 04, 2011 08:39 AM  | Hide replies

The great Sunil Gavaskar (who ironically did not contribute in the world cup win, but single-handedly held the our batting) once defined a mantra for winning. Bowlers win matches, while Batsman save matches. In the era of Test cricket, that was true in majority of cases. In the shortened version of the game, the exciting run chases have dented that theory a little bit. But few run chases are succesful with wickets falling around. And successful run chases are ultimately finished by bowlers playing the role of batsman.

Having said that the indian bowling attack is looking pretty weak. Zaheer is bowling well, but cannot run through a side in 10 overs. Munaf is peaking but is more an accurate bowler than a wicket taker. Nehra needs rest. Ishant is not the same bowler that he is in Australia and Praveen Kumar has not played for some time. Harbhajan can take more wickets by aggravating the batsmen with his tongue than his spin. The rest of the spinners will not get a chance to play.

Of the part-timers, Sehwag is the best. Yuvaraj probably does not believe in his own bowling. And Yusuf uses his height for banging the ball. There is probably a danger that if Yuvi and Yusuf bowl, they may concede, at a minumum , 60% of the runs they score with the bat.
I am willing to concede that if our bowling clicks, Yusuf will perform the role of a finisher a-la-Micheal Bevan. But if our bowlers get carted all over the field, will he fire? Single-handedly. Maybe once.Like Kapil.

Opening pair is crucial for us
by surya das on Feb 04, 2011 07:47 AM

success will be lies on our opening partnership, cause not only they will pilled up scored but all so in quick time which will gv every individual player to settle and play their natural game.. Sehwag will be the key followed by Raina and Yusuf in depth overs at the down.

Worried will be at bowling department, we can not expect Zaheer will come up with every other delivery and strike gold for us. But, yes if we bat first, and scored a huge score card, then it will release the pressure on bowlers. Good luck India

Aswhin is the dark horse here
by kumar on Feb 04, 2011 01:53 AM  | Hide replies

Ofcourse Ashwin is really dark and is going to be the dark horse. He is going to win the World Cup by sitting on bench. Ofcourse that's what he has been doing for last 2 years. He was selected for lot of tournaments and he is on bench all the time.
unfortunately other dark horses Dinesh Karthik and Badri are not selected.

Kapil Dev did not take india single-handedly to a win in the 1983 World Cup. HE won the match against Zimbave single-handedly. India had to win 5-7 other matches to win it.

Roger Binny was the highest wicket taker from india. Sandeep Patil destroyed Bob Wills in the semis along with Yashpal Sharma. Mohinder Amarnath won the Man of Match awards in the semis and finals. And it was Balwinder Singh Sandhu's inswinger that cleaned up Greenidge in the finale and started the slide. Kapil played great but did not win it single-handedly.

It are inaccuracies or exaggerations like these which make the articles not reading.

You know what was the secret of India winning the WC 1983?

The Indian team had basically two type of bowlers (with the lone exception of Kapil Dev) - slow and slower. The ball did not rise from the pitch when the likes of Binny, Amarnath, Madan Lal, Kirti Azad, Balwinder Singh Sandhu were bowling while most of the opponent batsmen were looking for the deliveries to come atleast at their knee level if not higher!

Result? The opponent batsmen were left bewildered getting bowled or lbw!

Sarcasm apart, one does not demean a bowling attack which won, not one, but TWO world cups. And that too across two continents.
Binny,Madan Lala and amarnath were also a part of the indian team which won in 1985. Roger Binny was again the highest wicket taker. And the ball rose much above the knee on the bouncy tracks in Australia. And Kapil Dev was NOT the captain. Though i watched his "single-handed" destruction of Hadlee in the semis with awe.
The "slower" indian bowlers were a waste on the flat indian pitches made in 80's. But were exteremly lethal in England due to the swing and Australia due to the bounce. The above mentioned bowlers along with the likes of Sandhu, Prabhakar, Sharma and Kulkarni exploited the seam beautifully under these conditions. Thrown in spinners like Shastri and Siva, they formed a very lethal supporting cast, with each chipping with a couple of wickets.
In 1985, the indian bowlers combined to take 49 of the possible 50 wickets. The stars had aligned such that the support cast combined to produce a beautiful performance. The "stars" did thier part but did not carry the show.
A guy like Srikanth, who was there should have known better. Relying on guys like Yusuf and Yuvi, who are sluggers like him, is not a good plan.

Yeah that single handedly was too much...It was good team with almost 7,8 all rounders in it at given time...and they all (including Kapil)performed wonderfully hence the result..WC victory...
