The openers were out of sync for the Test series
by Nikhil Shah on Aug 25, 2011 12:11 AM

The aftermath of this series boils down to one thing. Over the past 7 tests or 14 innings they had the right and best options in the WI tour of Mukund and Vijay.

Should they have continued to tour England?

In the absence of both Shewag and Gambhir the pressure to get a good start was difficult. So for the England tour should the selectors go with a pair which has been playing cricket but not as established as Gambhir and Sehwag?

There are several reasons the management can look at this situation.

This resulted in India getting poor starts for the last 14 Test innings. What was the solution then?

It would have been better to not rest or exclude both the openers at the same time. Shewag was injured but that was not avoidable. Missing both regular openers in WI was a problem. The Test opening aspect is the most difficult job overseas and Mukund/Vijay had difficult time surviving.

Murali Vijay had bailed Gambhir out in India, but it is not possible to bail both out at the same time.

The inclusion of Ishant and Gambhir has made a big difference to the Indian side over the last 2 years. We hope Varun Aaron and Rahane can add to this difference.

Though Ishant has slowed down, Varun will make a similar impact early. If he can decide to focus more high nutrition diet and a very strict fitness regimen along with playing lesser cricket than needed.

Varun Aaron in this short List-A career has an eco rate of 4.6, which makes him a legitimate contender with his pace to survive
