Re: NO PRACTICE FOR ENGLISH CONDITION
by NANAJI on Aug 02, 2011 02:50 PM
We are missing three things:
1. We don't have an express pace bowler, who can change the game with his own even on flat track.
2. We don't have any quality spinner.
3. We don't have a genuine all-rounder..
....
BCCI should think and please select Pujara & Badri type of players in test matches instead of Yuvi or Raina...
Yuvi and Raina are excellent players for ODI/T20 formats but not in test matches...

2 REASONS FOR INDIAN FAILURE
by Kabeer on Aug 02, 2011 02:41 PM  | Hide replies

Dont be too harsh on Indian team!

What went wrong was:

1. It has gone to England with just enough bowlers with no spares. And with Zaheer breaking down in the first session of first test, it is a puncture to your four wheels with no stepney. And the fact that India ran on three wheels is commendable enough.

2. Now regarding Harbhajan: surely he didnt bowl like one who took 400 wickets; but then there are two factors.

A. No other talented spinner had emerged after Kumble retired to challenge Harbhajan and take his place.

B. Once even the great Kumble had said, the main reason for his not taking wickets on overseas tours is that his role drastically changes overseas. That is he is asked to contain the batsmen so that the pacers will go for the kill and get the wickets. If a spinner has to go for wickets then he has to take chances for getting hit and the same holds true for pacers as well. When are told not to take chances of getting hit how can you take wickets? The same holds true for Harbhajan too when he is touring overseas. Harbhajan is told to contain the batsman and the batsmen gets frustrated and take their chances against the pacers and pacers get wickets. Now very few spinners can play both roles of containing in one series and going for kill when you play in your own country. That means you have a race horse which runs races in one season and works on a farm in lean season and we expect it to be the best race horse when it races and the best farm horse

In Test Matches, taking wickets is the order (first order). Containing has to be done depending on situation. No need to contain someone when they are 120/8. If a front-line spinner cannot attack and pick wickets then he should not be in the team. That role can be done by somebody like Yuvaraj or Raina. Problem is they can't bowl 50 overs as it may affect their batting and also accuracy in their bowling. Just for that reason, you can't have such "containing" spinners. Especially if you want to win test matches.

I don't think Kumble purposely bowled defensively. Just that he could not attack properly with flight and turn. His attack bowling was usually to have men around and bowl bit shot. That ploy will fail miserably outside India.

But I agree Kumble was a better bowler than Harbhajan at least he used to keep the run rate down, which Harbhajan would have tried

No!

Absolutely No!

When you are batting the role given to Dravid, probably that suits his style too, is to keep one end up and drop anchor without taking risks and scoring runs at a good rate. That scoring runs role is given to Laxman and Tendulkars.

Same thing applies to bowlers too!

Just the same way, some batsmen are told to play defensively some bowlers are told to bowl defensively.

You dont find in any team all batsmen firing on all four cylinders; the same thing holds true for bowlers too!

It works the same way in Army too!

You have a strike corps and you have some to defend.

If it can happen to a player like Kumble, which Kumble himself had said when asked as to why he is a lion in India and a rat outside, this is the answer he gave.

Harbhajan on any day is not a better bowler than Kumble. So expecting the team to ask Harbhajan to go on all cylinders particularly in English conditions is very very unlikely

IPL has to be curtailed
by hawaldar on Aug 02, 2011 02:39 PM

IPL should finish in 20 days or so and not 2 months. Teams must play just 5 to 10 matches in the league stages (no need of 15 to 20 matches). Its better if they are split up into 3 or 4 groups with 3 or 4 teams each. (They can add few more new teams if required).

That will balance both Indian Premier Cricket and International Cricket. They should not be so greedy and look at only money. Its enough if we get the status of running a premier league...

India have been comprehensively outplayed by England

I can straightaway say that this team is not giving 100% on the field. They are capable of much better performance. What is wrong with them? Is there any non-co-operative movement against Dhoni? Any rebellion?

I agree with you. There is something wrong with our players. This is the same team which performed so well in South Africa just 8 months back. SA also had world class fast bowlers like Del Styne & Morkel, but still our team managed to win 1 match & leveled the series with 1-1 result. Indian Coach Fletcher must be sacked.

Sehwag and Zaheer Khan make a lot difference. It is India's bad luck that these two crucial players are missing the tour (partly).

You said it...cant agree more. Not that Viru is going to make difference to the next two tests...but if India has started winning more tests @ home and abroad in the last 4 years the main reason is no one else but Viru. He sets up the game nicely for the team.

make green wickets in India
by rajan jaitly on Aug 02, 2011 02:31 PM  | Hide replies

we have dead wickets in India, can't expect the players to play in seaming conditions, and bouncy wickets. India has never won a sereies in Australia and South Africa, and India won't till we make fast wickets back home.

Ask England, Australia and South Africa to prepare red and dry pitches instead
