World Champions - and Sachin.
by Srinivasan Krishna on Apr 04, 2011 04:42 PM  | Hide replies

Winston Churchill- once famously remarked- Statistics is the final resort of rogues and politicians. How true- from a man who was both a rogue and a politician!
Somehow, since Sachin did not score more than 18 in the WC final, he may not be remebered! if he had gotten 19 more runs then he would have been the leading run getter, and the songs would have been a bit different.
in all the previous editions that Sachin played, mostly he shouldered the Indian dreams burden single handedly.
if one looks at this WC statistics, you will have Sehwag, Ghambir, Yuvraj, Kohli, Raina et al pulling in their weights in runs. that according to me is the difference.
Team India has finally arrived and Sachindia is finally and truly ended.
It is easy to say Dhoni played the innings of the WC, but in hindsight, only after the others pulled in their weight to get into the final! no knock of Dhoni would be possible if we had not won the previous matches!
But let me comment on some processes that led us to WC winners.
- The comforting and towering presence and performance of Sachin in the last two decades
- Eviction of the corrupt from the team
- Captaincy of Saurav, supported by Dravid the wall, Kumble the awesome and Special laxman
- Though much vilified, the process of performance and fitness ushered in by greg Chappel. ( eliminated cronyism of declining Ganguly)
- T20 win and focus on fitness and fielding
- Garys calmness off and Dhonis coolnes on field!
- primacy of team performance- WC!

But Ganguly conspired to kick out Laxman from the ODI team, and the guy's dream of playing in a world cup ended right there. He couldn't play in 2003, 2007, and of course 2011. Why was Sachin silent on that?

Sorry, but i could never see Bjorn Borg winning the French open ever....5 times Wimbledon champion and all that...
same with VVS... i can never see him win a world cup, with his liability of fielding and maybe just maybe shotcoming in running between the wickets for ODI's....
just look at Sachin at 37 diving on the ropes to save 2 runs....

And why was Sachin silent on the favoritism shown by Dhoni, selecting Raina over Yousuf ?

Because Yusuf played in 4 matches in the beginning and failed in all innings... And Raina succeeded.... Good Sachin didn't speak on that issue...

Sachin vs Bradman...lets end this debate! sachin is gr8st ever
by vijay on Apr 04, 2011 04:42 PM  | Hide replies

1) First few matches average for Michael Hussey was above 85 and so was Dhoni's.. see where they stand now.. One must have the longetivity and stamina to perform in all forms of cricket and that too CONSISTENTLY!! just playing a few test matches in some Era where people didnt even know cricket cant be compared to today's cricket and it's hectic schedules.

2) Don Bradman played in a different era, first of all I wouldnt like to compare but if you have to compare, the bowling was much weaker than it is today! the pitches were flatter and ground was smaller..

3)During Bradman's era, there was no LBW virtualy(umpires gave less) . That means, out of 280 innings which Sachin has played, 67innings are LBW, 14 innings bowled..that means Sachin in those ocassion he can be not out.

4) Bradman much talked average of almost 100 was maintained bcoz he played only 52 test matches , had he had played more than 100 tests , as per law of averages, it wud hav come down to around 50 , so don't be fooled by avg of 100.

5) Bradman played one opponent mainly..England. Sachin against 10 countries and he has excellent records against each of them, with 50 plus avg against the best(aussies).

6) Bradman didnt travel to the subcontinent, so didnt play high class spin. In contrast tendulkar dominated warne, saqlain etc. Great player of spin, pace and swing!

7) Bradman didnt have the pressure of ODIs and 2020s.Tendulkar not only played record no of ODIs but also is the leading runs and century scorer. Mind boggling to go alongwith 15000 plus test runs

8) Bradman didnt have the pressure of 1 billion. In india, 1 billion pray that SRT scores big every time he walks out.

9) No media to rip Bradman. While aajtak, and other crappy channels blast tendulkar for any failure.

10) Tendulkar didnt have the support of a good batting order, and remember him playing with likes of somasundran, bharadwaj, noel david, ramesh,ss das and stuff. Bradman was part of invincibles, so batting was shared.

11) Finally tendulkar is a known partnership breaker..150 ODI wickets. A true genious indeed!!

12) Also playing for so many years and so many matches like Tendulkar is staggering. To survive the fitness aspect itself is awesome. Bradman had the luxury to play far fewer matches and remain fit. Tendulkar lost some avg due to fitness.Bradman didnt play 22 years non stop but tendulkar is doing just that and that too with such consistency which is remarkable.

13) and in bradman's era fielding was very poor ,no conscious diving efforts to save 4s n even singles as it happens nowdays.

14) Majority of cricket was played only between england and austtralia. Out of his 52 test he played 37 against england. On the other hand England players had to face those top quality? aussie bowlers and he did not. Other teams he played against were WI, India

15) His 17 tests where he scored really heavily 150 ? average was against india, SA and WI - the then Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Why would uncovered be such a great disadvantage. Protective equipment really did not really matter because amount of short pitched stuff wasnt that much. Well short boundries dont make too much difference becauase batsman like lara, tendulkar, richards or pontings boundries stay hit on any ground.

16) don was a master and so is sachin. but do not forget one thing sachin has raised the level of batsmanship.

17)i think bradman was a one of the greatest batsman but he played in old times. Where there were no in swing, out swings, that time bowling was simple, but now? the time has changed.

Sachin shoud retire after his 100th ton
by VENKATESAN GURUSWAMY on Apr 04, 2011 04:40 PM  | Hide replies

I think Sachin should think of retirement after his 100th ton.He should have done it in Quarter finals /semi finals/finals.He got ample opportunity. But he didnt.Atleast in the next series,he should finish his 100th ton and gracefully retire.Though he might be good in batting no doubt but he is average in fielding.Current day cricket demands more as a fielder.

how Sachin outscores Bradman
by vijay on Apr 04, 2011 04:38 PM  | Hide replies

1] In the era of Bradman, the one single test lasted for 9 days. The format was reduced to 5-day in 1945 after which he played only 6 tests at an average of 31.4. Bradman's stike rate was not more than 29.7.
2] He played only 4 spinners in his time- Clarie Grimmett, Headley Verity, Eric Hollies and Bill O'Reilly, none of whom he was comfortable against. In fact, he was bowled by a googly in his last match. Out of these, 2 spinners were of his own team. He played only Verity and O'Reilly in international matches. He admitted that playing spinners was the most tricky thing he faced in life. I highly doubt how he would fare against the spinners if they are available in plenty as in this era. We aren't sure of the quality of bowlers and their pace.
3] The fielders in his era were not even a quarter as athletic as they are today, the fielding standards were very poor. Most field placings were very aggressive, there were very less players on the boundaries. This explains his heavy dependence of runs on boundaries.
4] The competition wasn't as intense as it is now. High level of incompetent cricket explains why more matches resulted in draws rather than one of the teams winning.
5] He played only few teams, and at that point of time, it was clearly his team which was most dominant.
6] No pressure of expectations from the supporters as much as the players in the Indian subcontinent face.
7] He played very less matches as compared to what they play today. Today, players

7] He played very less matches as compared to what they play today. Today, players need more stamina to survive all the formats. No wonder, either we see players retiring at a young age today or quitting the test format. He and others got adequate rest and time to prepare himself for further games.
8] Most people in his era didn't take cricket as seriously as he did. Cricket wasn't a profession then, so we can say why his average stands out against his contemporaries. Bradman himself was of the opinion that there were other batsmen, contemporaries of his, who had the talent to be just as prolific as he was but lacked the concentration. Stan McCabe, who needed a particular challenge to bring the best of him, was no doubt one of them. "I wish I could bat like that, he is the greatest ever batsman I have seen."
9} He never played limited overs cricket, where scoring at a brisk rate is a must.
10] There weren't as many rules at that time. Its said that his bat weighed 6 pounds, I don't know its legitimacy though.
11] The bodyline bowling, which is said as unsporting isn't a genuine reason that he should be rated highly. There are many more deliveries invented today, which could have been rendered as illegal or unsporting then.
12] Donald Bradman has more not outs per innings than other contemporaries, this is a very huge factor for his high average.
13] Bradman played only in 2 countries, England and Australia, the conditions were familiar.

Dhoni plays only when he knows that he will get money out of it.... In his total tournament, his bat use to hardly touch the ball.. suddenly he played in the final match when Gambhir had already set Team India win....
Dhoni wants money and nothing else...
Congrats rest of team India... You were gem... Sachin Tendulkar is playing since 21 years in the same spirit.... At the age of 37 years also he is playing like a warrior... fielding in boundary line and batting as if he is very hungry for runs....
Dhoni plays like a nonfunctional helicopter shot....
Actually Gambhir should have been selected MAN OF THE MATCH and not Dhoni.... Gambhir made Team India to win and not Dhoni.

Sachin, the choker
by Abe Oye on Apr 04, 2011 04:34 PM  | Hide replies

Sachin always chokes on big occasions, and sure enough he failed in the final, just like in the final of WC 03. Its great that team India now has other batsmen like Gambhir, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Kohli who still won us the match. These marathis are very feeble minded and weak people. Certainly not captain material..
Captaincy should always be reserved for the North Indians, and team also should be 90% north Indian..
