during 60s, the Indian test cricket players were amatuers. they were paid pittance as fees on their tour to England.. only their lodging, kits and transport expenditure were borne by the BCCI. i read an article some years back, the players had large breakfasts and skipped lunches. as the lunch in the star hotel where they were put up was very expensive and their tour daily tour fees was meagre . they wanted to save few pound to buy as gifts to their kins back home!
