Great cricketers make bad captains
by Padmanabhan S on Oct 28, 2010 09:40 PM

It is now known the world over that the greatest ever cricketers are the most unsuited to coach the players of a nation. In fact, the greatest are not even known to have led their own teams to glory. They are fit only to play and earn laurels for themselves. It is beside the point that the country they represent also glorified in the process. Greg Chappell is just an example.
While the Indian players, who did not fare well in their playing days, could also coach a team efficiently, the saddest feature often seen is that they ignore their own fitness levels. Thus, they would set a very bad example for the young and upcoming cricketers.
It is now clear that BCCI made a grave mistake in selecting Greg Chappell as the Indian coach ignoring Tom Moody. The latter might not have been a cricketing great in his career, but that precisely made him a better coach than the former.
It is not necessarily Kirsten. It can be anybody who is not a cricketing star. But, what we have to see in his is his temperament. Is he of the type of involving himself in controversies, a domineering type and feels very him of himself and slights others. If these qualities are not seen him, he, without a very great cricketing records behind him, would be an asset for those who are looking for a good coach.
If a search for a retired player is made in this direction, it need not necessarily be a foreigner, but even an Indian player would fit the bill.
It's now for the BCCI to think over and decide.

now, foreign coaches plundering. No doubt, the records Have improved after Gary came.Don't we have anybody who knows cricket or who can communicate better with our players? We have many record holders in batting and bowling. Let Gary go and Anil Kumble take over. Probably,we will se better results.

role of a player
by veerapuram dharan on Oct 28, 2010 08:04 PM

if a player gets picked for the the team, the main role is to perform. if u are not picked in the eleven, respect the captains decision, come back strongly..take everything sportingly..its the ego in the players mind that spoils the team spirit. some time back, even viru had ego about dhoni during 2009 t20 wc and we all saw teh result. same with yuvi. he nurtured ambitions of becoming the captain, in the process, didnt support dhoni and also too many ambitions like this affected his explosive batting. am afraid, if we can see the same yuvi again in the future...if teh coach can take note of these things and sort it out, then he can do justice to his role..

kapils devils
by veerapuram dharan on Oct 28, 2010 07:50 PM

kapils devils won 1983 without a coach. dhonis 2007 team won t20 wc without a coach. coach's role is to fine tune technical fault in batsmen, especially gary, who is for batting. how can eric simons, a non performer for south africa, can guide our bowlers?

we want Gary Kirsten
by Devdutt Nayak on Oct 28, 2010 03:36 PM  | Hide replies

Gary Kirsten is the exact opposite of Greg Chappell.

Chappell was a sinister rogue.

Gary is the complete integral guru.

While we cannot deny the talent and the mind muscle of our current Test team, Kirsten is almost like Krishna, the great guide, the expert in the art of warfare.

Bob Woolmer was one such coach.

One wonders what would happen if Kirsten left for SA?
And then if Ganguly and Kumble came back to coach the team.
Seriously, that would be the best if Gary decides to go with SA.

What I do not like is that there are not as many black cricketers playing for SA.

This is bad. They should have 5-6 black players of such calibre that at least 2-3 are always playing and the other 3 are pushing the rest of the while players to perform in every match.

That would be the best SA team composition in my opinion.

If Gary can get that to happen, then he should give preference to SA.

For the centuries of suffering the native people of SA have faced, at least a century's worth of special opportunities are needed to help them come on par with a basic developing country standard of living.

sport, and cricket in particular, goes one hell of a long way in doing that.

And Gary is one of the best coaches around.

More black players needed in SA.

Otherwise we want Gary Kirsten :-)

wow,,,what a comment!
You want black people playing for SA no matter they deserve a place or not!
What is this black & white talk? If your so called Black player are performing well in domestic cricket they will come. Haven't SA played Ntini or Prince in their team?

well, black people still do not get all the facilities white players get. I am not saying anything extreme, stretching it is your choice, all I am saying is that the team composition does not reflect the population ratio.

I am quite aware and delighted that S African youth are taking to football, but there is so much scope for cricket and cricketers in S Africa yet, and so much for the black section of the population, that it should not be neglected.

Just one Ntini who has played 100 Tests is precisely the problem.

Remember the effects of apartheid do not go in 1 or 2 generations.

Duminy, Tsotsobe, Bosman are all colored players. What more do you want ? SA team composition is fine as it is. The reason there is a majority of white players in the cricket team is because most of the black players want to play football.
