A strong metaphor often associated with a few former captains like Hansie Cronje, Arjuna Ranatunga, David Gower etc is now owned by M.S. Dhoni - the swashbuckler from Ranchi.
I am not a big fan or a critic of Dhoni although I wish to give due appreciation to his leadership that has made India the best. It is true that Dhoni is being modest in saying things like "good team" etc but the fact remains the captain of the ship has to ensure the vessel reaches its shore. Dhoni is a good leader; one who understands where each and every player brings to the team.
He has not only done this captaining India but also while captaining the jigsaw puzzle of Chennai Superkings. He makes every team member click at the right time. Unfortunately I don't see any other Indian captain doing that. The closest person would be Sourav Ganguly - the prince of Calcutta.
Dhoni will certainly be held in high esteem in the Indian cricket hall of fame after his time. Sure he's not perfect - but then again nobody is !!
Dhoni is the best person available now for captaincy. But in recent times, he has not done anything of note with the bat. He has also lost his dashing game and become an accumulator. He needs to learn from Ganguly on how to back and inspire his players. His greatest asset is his calm and cool personality.
