A bit harsh
by SarvamKrishnarpanam on Jun 03, 2010 01:21 PM  | Hide replies

I'm a mother of two and when it comes to representing the country, I leave them behind and go abroad. Why cannot the cricketers do it?---That is a bit harsh from Champion Mary Kom..Even Cricketers sacrifice thier personal side while playing abroad, its another fact that they are paid extremly well, but it still cannot compensate what they miss.

India team or club team?
by yogesh on Jun 03, 2010 12:40 PM

Now I wonder that is it an Indian team or simply a club team governing by a private body; BCCI, who is not answarable to anyone, neither the Govt. nor the general public.

Even if not a regular team they can send atleast a B grade team. Their are 10 teams in IPL and 7 from each team should be Indian. THIS MEANS 70 GOOD PLAYERS. So secondry team can be send easily...

Why bother about it ?

Well first of all there are legal issues here. BCCI doesn’t agree with the whereabouts clause of WADA. So, it cannot participate in any tournament under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee. So, it’s not possible to send a team unless BCCI as well as Indian cricketers agree to conform with WADA whereabouts clause.

Secondly, Olympics and Asian Games are not considered as prime tournaments for all sports. For example in Soccer, if Olympic dates clash with La Liga or EPL or Serie A or Champions League you'd never see big stars participating in Olympics. Same applies sports like tennis or basketball where there are more lucrative and prestigious tournaments compared to Olympics/Asiad.

Also lets not ponder over the "national pride vs money question". I might sound harsh but fact remains that while we want sportsmen to play for "national pride", most of us would choose money over service to the nation's cause and sportsmen are no exceptions. How many of us would choose to work for DRDO over Lockheed Martin ? or SBI over Lehman Brothers ? or ONGC over Schlumberger ? So, lets not preach what we don’t practice in our real life.

Ya- lets run after Money, why to waste our Life over national pride, patriotism etc which is not practically preachable ? in India.

Who cares to even Live In India which is seeing trend of states turning more regional nowadays . Many Indians are migrating and settling foreveer in Australia and New Zealand.

Are u nuts.. What r u talking about? AG and Olympics are not big tounament? So which tounaments are big?

And as far as WADA cluase is concerned, the provision is their that if the board doesn't fall under that category, individual players will go through a testing before participating in the tounament.

And national pride always comes first. Nothing can be compared with it. People like u are in abundance in BCCI and thats the reason of this act.

Asian Gmes and Olympics are not the biggest tournaments in many sports like soccer, tennis etc. Winning FIFA world cup is much bigger than winning Olympics Gold (infact if you ask a Brazilian, an Englishman, a Spanish or an Argentinian football fan whether they’d rather win the World Cup or win gold medal in Olympic football, they won’t even stop to think). Similarly, for a top level tennis player success at grand slams is much more important than winning medal at Olympics. Top tennis players have been avoiding Olympics since the "Open" era in tennis. For example, Andy Roddick skipped Olympics last year to prepare for US Open. If Olympics dates clash with Grand Slams, so major tennis star would go for Olympics. The same applies to basketball. Commercial value is cited as measure of “bigness” and the fact is that the FIFA World Cup or Wimbledon is worth more in terms of sponsorship, advertising and broadcasting value. The Olympics is great sport and a great spectacle but, let’s be honest, it’s a collection of (largely) minor sports we get excited about once every four years – and even then, only if we’re winning.

Otherwise why is that Only Politiciains like Sharad Pwar,Narendra Modi, Rajiv Shukla, Arun Jaitley, Farooq Abdullah and Lalu Prasad are hungry after Cricket instead of investing money and time in neglected sports like Hockey, football, basketball, volleyball ?
