Cricket was originally played mainly to kill time which people had lot 100 yrs ago. Its a british legacy which was rejected by US as it lead to so much waste of time. I am sure you are not familiar with many sports....ever seen Tour de France? it takes a month.

tour de france consists of racing over different tracks/routes, different legs of the race.... they dont cycle continuously from morning to evening and for a month. each race over a track lasts just a couple of hours.
