Don,Sachin & Punter,
by shyam sidh on Jan 21, 2010 04:32 PM  | Hide replies

Don played mainly primarily against England and english bowling was ordinary. Yes he has scored temendously but in those days fielders never dived to stop ball and used to clap (remeber G.men's game)in case of good shot. Cricket was played by elites.
In the moder era cricket fielders put their best efforts, bowlers are aggressive...Viv Rich. Sachin has played gaisnt greats of modern day cricket such as Macgrw, Warne, Akram, Imran to name few. He is has scored under pressure. There was a time when Sachin used to bat alone without any support.
On the other hand Punter have never played against best bowling attack (his own team mates)and had one of the best Opening pair and in most cases came to bat when they were in commanding position.
I think Sachin is "The Great". We should shop comparing with Don.

Dont compare the great legend to your local hero. Bradman batting average is just under 100. and one more thing he played only 52 matches. In this match only sachin played well under pressure not in many matches, even as like Dravid.

Sachin is not local hero neither is Punter. When Don played bowling was not comparable to today's Ranji matches. Cricket was played by ruling elites and army jawans (rungroots) used to collect ball at boundary. Cricket was played for fun, nothing was at stake....national pride, marketing and advt. rights, sponsorships etc. Dear statistics is one big lie.."Statistics is life bikini, What ever statistics reveals is important but what it hides is vital". SO dont look in averages..they are for fools.

Just to add...
Gambhir is going great guns and we have got very good bat to partner with explosive Viru. He is doing fine job and let him do that, records will be taken care automatically.

I don't think any one will break Bradman's record. one or two may be broken, but in toto it is not possible. What a batsman he is

But those days cricket was not cricket like these days.Bowling had not improved much and people were scoring many many runs without trouble.

think about this before over-rating.

Unique?? How come unique?
by Aneesh Ramachandran on Jan 21, 2010 01:51 AM  | Hide replies

Rediff goes from worse to worst! There are other 3 batsmen who already made the same record. Then how Gautam's record will become unique? What is the meaning of unique? Please somebody correct me, if I am wrong. Sorry.

It says "on course" for unique record i.e. he is progressing towards a unique record. Once Gambhir surpasses Bradman's record of 6 centuries in consecutive matches, his record will become "unique" !! :-)

Even if he does not make/break Bradman's record, he will still be unique as the only Indian in this group to come this far. Wonder why some people get so hung up on vocabulary.

At least there is one clear guy who speaks his heart out, in the times of diplomatic political statement. Yes, Bangladesh can not take 20 wickets- he was right and our batsman esp Yuvraj wanted to prove him wrong

BTW 18 is so far off from 20, and a total of 413 is so massive a total that the Sehwagism has been proven right.... eh? :)

India will slaughter BD today to show that they (chucker Shakib and Co) do not belong in the same league with the best team in cricket. There will be no mercy, no slack in tight bowling and fielding. The match would have been over in three and a half day if there was enough light.

Good to see that you have skirted clear of the issue of losing 18 wickets to an "ordinary" side... :)

But you may continue with your "Sehwagisms".... :)

Indians' Records
by sanath on Jan 20, 2010 11:53 PM  | Hide replies

In fact, I would count Indians' batting records (be it Sunny, Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly Sehwag or Gambhir) as having more value than those by other teams, as we never had the luxury of having to play against a team with a weak bowling attack like ours. At any given point, we have never had an attacking bowling lineup like others - all we could boast of were the spinners, and then Kapil. Srinath was fast, but not comparable to Akhtar or Waqar or Brett Lee. The players from other teams like Ponting and Lara could occasionally "bat themselves back to form" (the words used by Gooch after his 333 in 1990) against India and score a few centuries as well.

if you were so right, then all the batsman would have had those great batting records against our bowlers:).. seems it is not the case...

which proves the point that our bowlers may not be that bad ...

and on a given day.. there are 11 batsman in an inning, if only one batsman consecutively scores 5 centuries and nobody else does it.. it speaks about that batsman's abilities... you can't argue that one either :)..
