Future Indian Test batting replacements
by Nikhil Shah on Jan 19, 2010 03:06 AM

The Bangla bowlers did a good job. But India has to look into the future for its aged batting lineup. With back spasm's and stiff necks the replacement needs to be a bit solid.

It seems like Karthik effectively cannot overcome Dhoni's back spasm and a better batting WK could be Parthiv Patel.

Dhoni's replacement performance in the domestics:

Parthiv Patel 159 innings @40.85

It may be time for the selectors to also look at how long Laxman can carry on. There are possible middle order heavyweights in the domestic scene with great fielding skills as well. So for Yuvraj and Laxman the several possiblities from the FC scene are:

Rahane 58 innings @65.44
Pujara 72 innings @56.00
Murali 54 innings @55.01
Sharma 50 innings @53.52
Tiwary 58 innings @52.76

The cut-off point has to be a minimum average of 55 and a mininum playing experience of about 50 innings, that way if a player is lucky, initially, it will cancel out in the long term. So the longer he has played the more accurate the average.

A batsmen's average tells you at what level he is playing the game. It gives a chance for the selectors to assess if he needs to be persisted if he fails and was a bit unlucky initially.

With a combination of age, sample size and fielding skills, Rahane is the top contender for Yuvraj and Laxman, the next contender is Pujara.

India will win within 3 days. They will follow on and will not exceed India's first innings total.

Do you know a team cannot make the other team follow-on if the lead is less than 200 runs? Learn the basic rules of cricket before you post something meaningful.

However, I do think that India has come back into the match and only weather could save Bangladesh.

It is true that I got carried away. However if another half a day is lost then BD has to score at least 90 to avoid follow on. I believe we will bundle them out for less than 90.

Alem:

We "may". But we "may not" either.

So don't say we "will". On the first day of the match we would have said "we 'will' score 500 plus" (our lowest score against Bangla before this match was 429).
What happened? "Sehwagism" hit us.

Don't let that happen to you again. So wait and watch and enjoy the match. :)

Critic,
I am sorry but you got it wrong as well.. Do you know 150 runs rule?

PJ, I got it right. You tried to act smart and you got it wrong here.

I also know 150 run, 100 run and 75 run follow on rule as well. In general and in the context of the present India-Bangladesh match, 200 rule would be implemented.

The "Learn the basic rules of cricket before you post something meaningful" applies to you as well. Who is Mr. Sehwag now.

PJ, for you who jumped your gun and for others who are not aware of the follow-on rule, here is the rule:

Lead on first innings
(a) In a two innings match of 5 days or more, the side which bats first and leads by at least 200 runs shall have the option of requiring the other side to follow their innings.

(b) The same option shall be available in two innings matches of shorter duration with the minimum required leads as follows:
(i) 150 runs in a match of 3 or 4 days;
(ii) 100 runs in a 2-day match;
(iii) 75 runs in a 1-day match.

If no play takes place on the first day of a match of more than one day's duration, the above rule shall apply in accordance with the number of days remaining from the actual start of the match. The day on which play first commences shall count as a whole day for this purpose, irrespective of the time at which play starts.
