BCCI doesn't care the Ranji Trophy
by Cricket Fanatic on Jan 08, 2010 12:11 PM

It's a pity that Indian team is playing elsewhere in some utterly insignificant ODI tournament while the final and semifinal of the premier domestic tournament are being held at home. Unless and until BCCI themselves give due importance to the domestic turnaments like Ranji trophy, India can never show continuous dominance in international cricket.

Down the memory lanes - Bombay Vs Karnataka in 1982-83 Season..
by Jay Sastry on Jan 08, 2010 04:16 AM

That was literally a Gavaskar Vs Vishwanath contest. I remember it was the semi-finals where Vishwanath was declared 'Out' LBW for 37. Vishwanath known for his sportsmanship did oppose the decision but walked out. Looking at this, the crowd went on a rampage and burnt one of the sight screens. However, Vishwanath pacified the crowd and the match continued with a Karnataka win based on the first innings lead.

Useless Ranji format
by Indigo Sepoy on Jan 07, 2010 08:27 AM  | Hide replies

no point in deciding winner based on 1st innings score. Keep the match as 6 day test match so that it will get over.
If match is draw, team that scored the runs faster should be declared the winner based on run rate

If Karnataka win, they get to keep Belgaum. If they lose they should return Belgaum to Maharashtra.

Captains'mind set in Ranji Trophy
by Dilip Mahanty on Jan 07, 2010 04:08 AM  | Hide replies

Why are the captains of Mumbai & Karnataka killing traditional cricket? Both these teams had huge first innings scores and rolled their opponents for modest scores. Instead of enforcing follow ons and pressing for victories they allowed the matches to meander to meaningless draws!BCCI should change the rules to reward positive intent and punish teams who are only looking to get points out of draws!

Maybe because they think killing traditional cricket, as you put it, is better than killing their bowlers. With only 3-4 days gap between the semis & finals, which captain would want to tire his bowlers, or worse, injure them???

Yeah !I'm highly agreed with Dilip. There is no use of getting in to finals with such shows. They had a huge lead and still if they didn't want to force them a follo'on, they had made enough runs on day 3 to extend their lead to 400 runs. Then they could have give them a chance and match could have been a bit interesting! Chasing 400 is never an easy task on Indian pitches on day 4 or 5. BCCI must think on this side of the "win on a first inning lead" rule.

Well, both teams knows the rules before hand that in the event of draw, the topper of the Ist innings will be declared as the winner which is kinda similiar to ODI format except that run-rate isn't considered here. In otherwords, it's One-Innings match pretty much ! But both teams have adequate time to play out their first innings. So , what's the issue ?? Just think it of a different format of a game.
